We moved
Into a Jew house last year with a very overgrown garden. Cut everything back pretty hard and have had some lovely surprises but we have 2 plants that have come up from pretty much nothing, both previously hidden under large overgrown bushes. Can anyone help with identifying please? I think one may be a poppy? It’s very possible that they’re weeds though 😊

Number one looks like a cardoon.

Whitney168 · 09/06/2021 20:07

Agree on cardoon, and maybe valerian for the second?

Elephantscantfly · 09/06/2021 20:31

Thank you, so are they weeds or should
I leave them? they have both grown enormous in the last 2 weeks!

Cartoon, and,yes, I think valerian.
Not weeds, beautiful bold plants, so I would definitely leave.
Valerian smells lovely when it flowers. Cardoond have big artichoke/ thistle type flowers.

I think no. 2 looks like wisteria

Second picture is a Cephelaria.. related to scabious..fantastic plant...bees and butterflies are crazy for the flowers..
The buds start off as little black studs and gradually expand and unfold the petals like origami!
The flowers will follow the sun round the garden during the course of the day...the stems weave and wave..
Deadhead regularly if you can - it will prolong flowering period.
Enjoy.
