What is the best way to line a planter?

Basically the title says it all.

We are in the process of developing the garden. We have bought these planters - unlined and unvarnished.

We are going to plant veggies in the big ones and lavender and mint in the small one.

What is the best for lining them and how do I do it? Would a heavy duty staple gun work?
Also, how do I work out how much of the lining do I need?

Dimensions are
40x33cm
72x44cm

Both are 28cm deep.

Thanks in advance, I'm pretty clueless to be honest 🤦‍♀️

You need drainage holes in the bases of the planters and through the liners. You can use empty compost bags, etc. You could staple them on, but you don't need to. You'll need crocks in the bottom like broken flower pots or tiles or even pebbles or polystyrene packaging. Then put your compost in. If you're growing summer veg you can use grow bags - just empty them into the planters. Empty into a pile and use the bags, opened out, to line the planters. You'll probably need a couple for each.

Lavender and mint will be OK together for the first year but really have slightly different needs. Lavender wants sharp drainage and as much sun as it can get, mint prefers plenty of water. But the real problem is that mint is a terrible thug and if it’s happy it will overrun the planter. You could put mint in in pots buried in the planter to contain it a bit though. If you put in more than one type of mint I find that the more ordinary variant outdoes the more interesting variant, so that’s another reason to keep them contained.

I love your planters.
Good advice by PPs, especially about the Mint. How about putting some parsley and chives in your herb planter.
Maybe a plant that flowers to attract pollinators to your veg. We plant Calendula marigolds around our raised beds.
