So we are due to returf half our lawn where it is currently bare as we have removed plants and bushes. The garden company have pointed out that it's only £200 extra to returf the entire lawn and do we want to do that? Otherwise, the new grass may not match the existing grass.
Our reasoning for only returfing what needs doing:
- we don't mind it not all looking uniform. Overtime, we'll seed and hopefully it will all blend in but, even if it doesn't, we are not after a show garden.
- whilst not perfect, the existing lawn is in okay condition. Some weeds here and there which we'll get rid of but generally looks and seems okay. So seems wrong to rip it up and get rid.
- keeping the existing bit means we can stand on it so easier to water the new bit as well as our flower bed. We've returfed the entire garden before and our sprinkler doesn't reach the back part. It was a nightmare to water and a constant worry that the new turf would die!
- the bit being returfed is in the shade so we can use shade tolerant turf. The existing lawn is in the sun but if we rip it all up, there's no one size fits all turf.
However, we're being asked are we really sure we wouldn't want to replace the existing lawn and returf the whole lot given that it isn't going to cost much more. So we are now doubting ourselves! When people returf, is it usual to rip up the existing lawn and start over???
What would Mumsnetters advise in our situation?
Thanks!
