Can anyone identify these plants please?

I have just moved in to a new property where apart from a small planted area, the garden is a blank canvas.

Although I am an absolute beginner re gardening, I would like to look after the shrubs already planted, except I have no idea what they are and how to look after them.

Pics will hopefully attach!

  1. Hebe
  2. hybrid bluebell Hyacinthoides x massartiana not Spanish, despite what many sources will tell you as the pure Spanish bluebell is vanishingly rare in the the UK.
  3. Carex pendula, pendulous sedge. Seeds very prolifically
  4. Perennial poppy
  5. Pieris japonica - the growth habit is characteristic, and I think you can see the last vestiges of the bright red new growth, which turns yellow and then green as it matures.
6 Rose - a garden variety, not a wild rose, as you can tell from the rather large leaflets, with only 2 pairs of leaflets to each leaf.

Thanks Mere, I have been reading about Spanish bluebells and was wondering if I had a rarity Smile

This is a portuguese wild flower site, with pictures of the different species of Hyacinthoides. The top set is Hyacinthoides non-scripta, which is our bluebell. Spanish bluebell, Hyacinthoides hispanica is at the bottom - you can see it's every bit as delicate as our bluebell, and quite unlike the big beefy hybrids that all the plant suppliers label as "Spanish bluebell".

I'd get rid of the sedge, but the shrubs and poppy are good.

The pieris likes acid conditions, so get some appropriate feed (often labelled as for azaleas and rhododendrons) . If you notice the lower leaves - the ones which should be green - going an unhealthy looking yellowish, it may need some additional sequestered iron.
