I have these small trees in my garden and wondering what they are?

My app (“PictureThis”) says they’re plum trees. I’m surprised by this as there are 4 fairly close together- who would plant 4 plums trees, makes me suspicious of what the app is telling me.

We’ve been here 2.5 years and I don’t know when they were planted

Plums can send out runners that make another tree pop up. They might not have been planted that close together.

MrsBertBibby · 30/05/2021 18:44

Have they flowered? Plums should have flowered by now, I think?

Prunus is a huge family of trees and they are quite capable of self seeding wherever so it could be wild invader dropped by a helpful bird. Lots are very pretty with good wildlife value.

I wonder whether it’s one of the round-leaved willows. Otherwise, could be plum - see what others are saying. Except that plums don’t send out runners, the dependent plants come up from the roots when they’re near the surface

No they haven’t flowered yet. I’ve been watching them for 2.5 years and app keeps saying they are plum trees. I just think it’s really odd to plant 4 in a middle sized garden.

They’re quite far from each other and look like they have been consciously planted in each location iyswim. They are planted next to raspberries and black currants, so I suppose it would be rational for them to be plum trees.

I say fairly close together but mean there is a bit of lawn between each - they’re probably 1m-2m distance from each other

I instantly thought it was a plum.

ChelseaChop · 30/05/2021 22:15

@Jahebejrjr that’s really interesting... any idea what sort they might be and when I can expect fruit? They just look very different to the ginormous Victorian plum and greengage plum trees in my MIL garden which produce the most amazing plums

I couldn’t tell you which variety. It could be a plum on a dwarf rootstock. You’ll find out soon enough!

If they've clearly been deliberately placed I would imagine they have been carefully chosen to cross pollinate and (one would hope) provide a nice variety of flavours and possibly harvest times. At least that is how I choose my own fruit trees. Fingers crossed Smile

Thank you everyone I shall watch and wait to see what they do!
