Recommendations for Plant ID apps?

I don’t know what half the stuff is in my garden. I downloaded an app but it’s not very good, can anyone recommend a good one please?

And if anyone fancies ID-ing these for me that would be great Grin - plant or weed??

The first one is a hosta.
Second one is a variegated hosta.
Third one is a perennial geranium/cranesbill.

Who needs a plant app when you've got MN?!

Ooh I know!! I’m a beginner gardener so pretty chuffed to recognise these

Definitely hostas (fab plants) and ground geraniums which give good ground coverage. 2 great plants, easy to care for and look great

I used PictureThis which seemed to work well but I decided not to pay after free trial... currently using google lens for free but it's highly hit and miss! The experts on Mumsnet seem to be a good solution, but why do I feel too guilty to ask Grin

I gave up on apps and joined a gardening Facebook group - best thing ever 😊There’s always someone who can identify the plant in question.

Your hostas look amazing. Mine get eaten to bits no matter what I do. Had to give up growing them Sad

Just ask on here :) lovely hostas :)

The trouble with plant apps is that they hold a worldwide database and will often match to things that don't grow in this part of the world. Sometimes the easiest thing to do is buy a book. Grin The 'Expert' series by DG Hessayon has a whole range of books suitable for beginners and second-hand copies are easy to come by. I used mine so much for years, and they are practically falling apart now.

You can look through it and learn about them all from there. Then when you go round your garden you will start to recognise things. Walking round garden centres and reading plant labels has a similar effect.

@MaMelon which group is that please?

Most people who are into gardening (or birdwatching etc) really enjoy passing on their knowledge, but also coming across something they don't know either.

Brilliant! I may start posting all my hopefully not silly questions then!

Hello it’s My Scottish Garden. Not sure if you live up here but I don’t imagine they will check! It’s a brilliant site, I love it Smile
