Fibreglass garden pots; anyone renovated?

We have several grey fibreglass pots in the garden, they are quite scruffy now and I would like to repaint them, hopefully a matt grey finish.
I have browsed the internet and found conflicting advice on the type of paint to use.
Has anyone successfully repainted fibreglass garden pots?

Yep - Ronseal garden paint - redid some shabby dark pots in an off white colour a few weeks ago and came out amazingly.

Fibreglass ones? Did you have to sand them/use primer?

Did plastic fibreglass and ceramic - no primer - the plastic ones I think may flake easily because I didn’t but the fibreglass ones are fine - mine had a texture to them which i think helped. You can ‘key’ them with primer or by sanding them slightly to give the paint something to grip to but unless you’re moving them around all the time a standard paint job will be fine - Id do one and make sure you’re happy with it first obviously but have done 9 or so of mine now and happy with them all. The Ronseal is definitely the best though as it’s opaque coverage and designed for metal wood etc etc...

Excellent! Thank you. I painted a glazed ceramic pot with garden paint and it flaked/peeled off rapidly. I didn't sand it though 😏
Sounds as though the fibreglass might be more successful, I’ll try on the scruffiest one.

Prime with zinsser 123 first. That should stop it peeling. If you don’t prime it first it is likely to peel.

I'm about to paint some plastic pots with Zinsser Allcoat Exterior Satin having researched others' experiences on various gardening forums. It doesn't need an undercoat which would will be great if it works. The blurb says it treats all exterior surfaces: wood, metal, masonry, plastic, concrete and cladding.

Thanks @Thefirsttime and @pandora206
Zinsser it is!

@Pottedpalm I wouldn’t use the zinsser all coat (or any paint) on fibreglass without using the 123 primer first. I know this from experience! The allcoat may well work on other materials without using the zinsser 123 primer first, but it won’t work on fibreglass.

My other top tip is to make sure the primer is very definitely dry before painting over it if your pots are being painted outside, the drying time is likely to be significantly longer than the tin says (I’d leave it overnight).

@Thefirsttime
Thank you; I have looked up stockists.
