Mini chainsaw sparking - is it okay?

I just got a mini chainsaw for cutting branches.
I have used it twice, for about 30 mins each time.
It is sparking inside the motor while it is running. Is that normal?

Have you put oil in it?

MyMajesty · 20/05/2021 08:59

No.
I have only just bought it.

Think that’s ‘the bushes’ in the motor.
Was it secondhand?

Etulosba · 20/05/2021 09:13

As above, it's the brushes for the motor sparking.

Is the chainsaw a reputable make or cheap and cheerful? The latter tend to make bigger sparks.

Don't put oil on it!

It's new, an obscure make from 'fulfilled by Amazon'. I was wondering about returning it.

Another thing is that when the battery is put in and the trigger squeezed, it doesn't start. But after a thump on the battery, it goes okay.

I was wondering if I'm being silly to be thinking there's something wrong, but maybe I'm being silly to hesitate in sending it back?

Chainsaws usually need oil. The instructions will tell you if it's needed. I asked had the OP put oil in it, not on it.

From what you've told us on here, that's enough to send it back. It sounds poor

Another thing is that when the battery is put in and the trigger squeezed, it doesn't start. But after a thump on the battery, it goes okay. That's reason to send it back.

It suggests to me (one the basis of a Physica A-level and half overheard conversation by the machine-obsessed in my family) that the connections to the battery aren't very good, and that might also explain the sparking. In other words, I am not an electrician or even anything resembling an electrician.

My experience with an electric toothbrush with the same symptoms is that it will only get worse.

If you are going to continue to use it (or indeed any outdoor power tool) make sure there is a circuit breaker somewhere which will cut off the current instantly if there's any leakage to earth (current leaking to earth through you is what is known as an electric shock).

Ignore the last paragraph! Quite forgetting this is battery operated!

SeaToSki · 20/05/2021 11:02

Doesnt sound safe to me, I would return it

Etulosba · 20/05/2021 13:21

I'd send it back.

I have a couple of Makita electric chainsaws. Neither make any sparks when they are running.

The fact that it doesn't appear to have an oil tank is not a good sign. The chain will need lubricating to run freely.

Thanks for all the helpful comments. I'll be sending it back and looking for a better one.
