It is about 3 or 4 feet tall, very common on the marshes near me, and popular with bees.

That's comfrey.

Thank you!!

I see it every day but couldn't put a name to it. I would have pictures comfrey much smaller and yellow if I was guessing. I have much to learn.

The smaller yellow ones you're thinking of may be cowslips (primula), they have a similar shaped flower!

If you're interested in identifying plants whilst out and about there are some really good plant ID apps you can get. I have one for when I come across something interesting.

I can spot a cowslip (there are lots of those too), but I would have thought Comfrey was tiny and herby.

I'll look into that app, it would be nice not to have to guess and make up names when DS asks.

Comfrey is a big beastly plant (though beautiful and useful). It's prickles get stuck in your skin and are nearly invisible so v hard to remove. Painful. Previous owner of my garden though it was a good plant to put right next to the path... Hmm

It certainly is a powerful looking plant. There are jungles and thickets of it all along the marsh paths, some of it up to my shoulder - I would be afraid to let it loose in a garden.

There are several species of comfrey, some are large, but others are creeping and rarely get above a foot in height. For flower colour, I can't think of a pure yellow. but there are certainly some with cream coloured flowers.

The pic (sorry it's a rubbish one) is of comfrey covering a bank by a stream about 1m wide - it's certainly not shoulder height!
