A gorgeous clematis for a pergola?

I'm looking for a clematis to be grown in a large pot up a pergola. I'm not fussed about the colour but I'd like a long flowering one with interesting seed heads if possible. Don't really like the very fussy flowered ones. Oh and if it smells divine too that would be perfect! Its for a sunny spot. Would love to hear your recommendations.

Montana Mayleen smells wonderful, I think, and would quickly cover a pergola. It’s very vigorous though so would need a big pot and a lot of space.

I have the apple blossom clematis. It’s one of the Stronger smelling ones, it’s like almonds.

It’s really vigorous though, I planted it late last summer, in about March time it was only about eighteen inches to two foot high, it’s now about six foot high and growing unbelievably fast.

Sorry I should say March this year, so in under three months it’s grown about four foot or so.

I've just looked up both of those suggestions and they both look lovely. Maybe I'll need to buy two...

I think I would get more than one, because generally I don't think they are incredibly long flowering - forgive me if you know this already, but group one are the early flowering ones that are out around now, then in mid summer you have group two and then late summer group 3 come out. I think I would probably get more than one, or possibly a clematis and a honey suckle for scent. I love The President in terms of clematis, (group 3) because it has really impressive flowers as other things in the garden begin to fade. Its doing really well for me on a north wall too.

...sorry, I think it's actually group 2 - still fabulous though.

@Bluntness100 is that one of the ones you cut right back every year?

@Didiusfalco do you mean 2 in the same pot? They need to be the same pruning type I guess?
