Anyone planting our runner beans and peas yet please?

My runner beans are getting quite tall, and I’m wondering whether how is the time to plant them into the ground. Peas doing well too. Or too early?

Any thoughts? I am in the SE.

Planted mine out last week and they snapped in the winds Sad, even though they were staked. What a shame

WellTidy · 17/05/2021 11:51

Sorry to hear that. I might hang on then!

I got too eager and planted some out in April Blush out of 6, only 2 are hanging on. I currently have replacements on standby to go out in the next few weeks.

I'd say too early for runners, give it another week or two, but peas are tough old things. Mine have been out probably 2 weeks.

eatpuddingdrinkwine · 17/05/2021 21:25

Planted mine out 2 weeks ago but sadly just tiny stumps left , slug rampage I suspect

VanillaSugar2021 · 17/05/2021 21:25

I met a neighbour in the village today who told me to plant out beans (the beans, not the seedlings) on 16 May every year, so I suppose we’re not too late to start again.

billybagpuss · 17/05/2021 21:29

Dad has his in, mine are still hardening off, we are way more sheltered than him.

Slugs have been late this year but now seem to be coming out with a vengeance.

Cookerhood · 17/05/2021 21:34

I usually plant mine the last week of May. Last year was a bit earlier I think. I've down some peas directly into the ground, so we'll see if they come up.

HillsBesideTheSea · 17/05/2021 21:40

I plant peas straight into the ground and don't do seedlings. Still getting light over night frosts here, and apparently long range forecast is for below average temp at night so I will be waiting with planting my bean seedlings out. If i was doing beans as seeds they would probably go into the ground about now. This time last year i was already eating peas as I had planted them the previous autumn. Wish i had done that again.

I have some sweet peas that are now SO tall they are starting to climb on the inside of my conservatory windows! Wanted to plant them outside today (SE here too) but every time I thought the sun was out a new storm started.
Hopefully they'll be out by the weekend, together with the courgettes.

Peas and broad beans sown last autumn in containers in a sheltered position and doing really well. Broad beans in full flower. Planted French bean seedlings out last weekend, again in a container in a sheltered spot and so far so good. They are starting to twine upwards and should soon have long enough shoots to wind round canes. (North of England)

I've just planted out sugar snap peas in my back yard. It's sheltered so doesn't really get much of a breeze so hopefully they will be ok! They are in the blue planter on the left. I've not grown anything before so fingers crossed!!

@snowytigers your peas look fab. I followed Charles Dowding's advice on You Tube to multi sow peas and they have done well and it was soo easy. I started them in little pots of about 6 together and planted them all out together. I'm new to sugar snaps so not sure what to expect! Those tomatoes are looking very healthy too!

Thanks so much! I got loads of advice from here on a thread a few months ago and everything had grown so well. I made the mistake of doing too many tomato seeds and now I have about 40 plants Grin Going to try and palm some off on to the neighbours...

Peas straight into the ground here & doing great. I wouldn't entertain runner beans 🤮

GoldenBlue · 18/05/2021 21:21

I put mine out a few weeks ago and they are doing great despite the dogs trampling them and the wind blowing the canes down. I think that has just made them stronger

Notsogreenthumb · 24/05/2021 12:04

I'd happily take some of those tomatoes off of you @SnowyTigers 😅

Tal45 · 24/05/2021 12:27

I'm planting my runners out this week as the weather looks to be improving (not today though!). Last year I planted them out a couple weeks earlier and the late frost got most of them. They're reaching the top of the windows though so looking forward to getting them out! I put a yoghurt pot collar around them to help deter slugs (works a bit) I always plant my peas straight in the ground, and always surround them with pea sticks straight away to keep the birds off the seedlings as they come up.

I've had my sweet peas outside for ages - in Lancashire. Firstly in the cold frame, then in pots on the patio. Some are planted into a large pot by the arbour (which also has a small jasmine beesianum in it) and they're looking very healthy. I've planted a couple into the border, they're not doing badly though much smaller as yet. Also some of a smaller variety in a hanging basket which are looking happy too. We've had plenty of wind, rain and some epic hail since these were planted out! The ones which aren't planted out yet (or have only just gone into a larger pot) aren't looking nearly as good - more straggly, smaller leaves.

I have grown some tomatoes indoors, and also put a couple outside in a grow bag. The ones outside haven't grown much and have a slight bronze colour on the bit of the leaves nearest the stem, otherwise dark green. The ones I kept in are very tall and leggy, but green. I'm not sure whether to replace the ones outside with the leggy ones or will the outside ones grow better when the sun comes out? Or just start again...Confused
