What would you plant in this to create more privacy? (Photo attached)

Neighbour has low wall and I need to create more privacy in our garden but that’s a whole other thread 🙄.... I’m going to get new, matching pots but what would you plant in them for maximum impact and privacy? Maybe something trailing? Evergreen would be best. I’m also thinking of planting a climbing plant, ideally it would be evergreen too but not too rambunctious so as to pull it over.

It will have pink and white Rosa Rugosa bushes either side and beautiful pink peonies in front.

Ivy would work, also possibly jasmine beesianum, or trachealospermum, but not sure if the pot would be large enough?

minipie · 11/05/2021 17:24

Vinca could work

Thanks for the suggestions, I was buying it on Facebook but mysteriously the lady’s partner sold it to someone else while she was out. Maybe someone offered more money or something 😢

So if anyone knows where I can but something similar let me know - am gutted

Try Homesense/TK Maxx - no guarantee of course, but they do have decent garden supports quite frequently.

Could you fit a larger pot or pots with wigwam of sweets peas (or even climbing French beans)? I know it’s not a permanent solution but would sort you for this summer until you find the right screen? ( i did this a couple of years ago but thankfully have a higher fence now!)

idontlikealdi · 12/05/2021 10:03

I don't think that is going to give you much privacy. Can you get some bamboo screening or similar?

stayathomegardener · 12/05/2021 10:31

The capacity of the pots is too small to sustain anything that will give privacy.

Plus it's designed to draw the eye not screen.

I'd plant a bamboo in a huge pot and place something similar elsewhere.

Oh and maybe message seller back offering more money in case the buyer "changes their mind"

You will need much larger (deeper) pots for most climbers. You might be able to get away with some of the ivy sold as being plants in those pots.

If you are putting it in a permanent location, I'd get a couple of really big containers (or plant in the ground next to it). Then maybe consider an evergreen climbing hydrangea or trachelospermum/ star Jasmine (if it is a sheltered sunny spot) for all year interest and privacy.

Bedding not being

Cyw2018 · 12/05/2021 10:44

What is your budget for the stand and the plants? You can get large mature trachelospermums already climbing up large square trellises.

lydia2021 · 12/05/2021 10:55

Laurel. Its evergreen. Larger pot or photina known as. Red Robin. Red Robin is reddish in spring and green rest of year. Height and spread good for both. Trim when you have reached your goal privacy wise

BumbleFlump · 13/05/2021 21:21

Hey, I did manage to get the screen, the other person obviously changed their mind!

Really good suggestions, thanks everyone. I think you’re right - I need to plant something more substantial. This would mean moving the peonies which I can’t do now as they’re about to flower. I have red robins and jasmine already so maybe Laurel or ceanothus, would love a bay bush too, a bit boring but useful for privacy and cooking too!

In the meantime, I bought two packs of trailing geraniums today from Lidl and will see how they get on. Do like the idea of trailing vinca too.

It’s not going to create much privacy but will hopefully break the view into our garden a bit and mean the neighbours can’t look straight across.

You can get some artificial ivy. I’ve this on an outbuilding and it’s surprisingly realistic.

You could wrap it round the white frame whilst you’re waiting for other stuff to grow to give you an immediate less harsh frame.

Bluntness100 thanks yes I was looking at similar yesterday...I think that’s the answer, have tried willow type screening before but I’m not keen on the look of it, it looks awful when it starts to break and you can see through it!

I also recommend bamboo, in a wide planter, for an instant screen.
