how to revive dd's tomatoes (which I killed)

DD is growing rare tomatoes from seed. She has nursed these tenderly for weeks and weeks. There was a pot with 3 good plants in, ranging from 4ins to maybe 9ins which she had brought into the kitchen because they'd got too cold and nearly died. They were recovering a little, and it was a warm sunny day and I put them on the window sill so they got full sun and warmth. Then the cat wanted to be let out so I opened the window. There was a gentle breeze, not cold, so I left the window open with the plants directly in front of it in full sun, warm and lovely.

DH wandered in. It's his habit that he closes the window if he thinks it's cold. He left the window open. I assumed it was not cold, so I left the tomatoes there.

It was cold. The wind was very cold. The plants got cold. DD can barely look at me she is so upset! These are 3 rare breeds which she's grown from seed. Nursed and nurtured. Loved!

Is there anything which might help them recover for the second time, when they hadn't fully recovered the first time....?

Spray them with warm water and put them in the light/sun. They don't tend to bounce back if they are tiny but a bit bigger and they might

Thats quite a strong response @finallyfluid Hmm

Growing from seeds can be lifeline for people struggling and I know its saved my life before. Youre quite right its all a matter of perspective, but since you don't share the op's dd's perspective perhaps you could widen yours a little too?

Op, I'm not sure I can provide any better advice than extra tlc, I'm sure a more experienced gardener than me will be along soon though.

My first thought, honestly, was to replace them and since its only been a few weeks I think you could still have time to do this.

Best of luck!

Yes try this! Fingers crossed for you.

It possibly was, but I lost two family members to this pandemic one of them a healthy 55 year old with no underlying conditions and I really can't be arsed with drama at the moment.

Jux · 08/05/2021 16:52

Thank you Mama1980, that's helpful.

Yes, FinallFluid, obviously this is a first world problem and there are truly awful things happening all over the place. DD is very aware of that.

I admit I have exaggerated slightly as I feel terrible. It is perfectly reasonable for dd to feel upset that her mum has partially killed some things which she has spent a lot of time and attention bringing to life. She is allowed to have first world feelings while remaining very aware of the rest of the world. We all know that our problems are as nothing to some others' problems; there will always be someone with worse problems. It doesn't mean that your problem is not a a problem and not a reason to be upset. But thank you for your contribution.

I have lost two family members to Covid too! I’m still posting questions and advice in the gardening section though.

OP I would try a little warm water as suggested. At 9 inches I think they might well recover.

tumpymummy · 08/05/2021 17:02

I'm surprised that a bit of cold wind has done them in as I presuming this was day time and so therefore no Frost involved? Maybe they were on their way out already? Or maybe the soil got too dry? Have u some tomato feed you could pep them up with?

Giantrooster · 08/05/2021 17:10

See if they recover, I don't know how far they are gone but try for a couple of days to keep them out of direct sun. See if it is possible to buy new seeds.

As for @FinallyFluid no matter your issues, it doesn't give you the right to launch on innocent threads spewing bile.

FinallyFluid · 08/05/2021 17:29

You are quite right and I apologise.

Sorry you have been bereaved, it is a difficult time. But this post was in the gardening topic asking for help from fellow gardeners, it wasn't in AIBU looking to create drama, unlike most of the posts over there.
pookypup · 08/05/2021 18:53

@Jux I did the same to my tomatoes yesterday, so am going to try the warm water and sun suggestion too!

Giantrooster · 08/05/2021 19:24

@FinallyFluid sorry for your loss, hope you have better times ahead.

Jux · 09/05/2021 17:57

Oh FinallyFluid, I am sorry. I didn't see your post just before my second, so had no idea - I'd have pulled my response if I had.

I'm sorry you've been bereaved. Of course it makes worrying about the possible loss of a couple of plants seem ridiculous, it is ridiculous beside your losses. I'm so sorry, it is such an awful time. I hope you have good people about you xx
