Wisteria advice

Can anyone give me some info on wisteria planting / care? I am a total novice but absolutely adore this plant and would be willing to put the work in! I understand they need pruning / tying in twice a year? Any help greatly appreciated!

No advice, but following! I dearly love wisteria but don’t think I can have it as I’ve got children and pets and apparently it’s poisonous. Such a shame. Sad

It's roughly - prune side branches in winter back to a few inches, and cut back long whippy branches in summer. RHS has a good summary

Linguaphile There are so many poisonous plants, including staples such as daffodils, that it's not easy to have a garden free of them. There's not much on a wisteria to make it attractive to children, though it would be a good idea to remove seed pods. Good article from RHS on poisonous garden plants But you have to do whatever you feel comfortable with.

Once wisteria get established they are easy to look after. It is getting them established that is the trick. No pruning for 2 or 3 years and plenty of water.

They can take a couple of years to bloom as well - mine didn’t bloom for the first three years after planting (although some of that could be due to me not having a clue what I was doing). It looks amazing this year though - or will do in a week or two from now when the buds are fully out.

Be ruthless about training it for the first few years, otherwise you’ll end up with a tangled mess.
