Star Jasmine

I've just bought a Star Jasmine. I could put it in the ground, but I've heard they get very large and are better controlled in a container. What size container would I need? I have one that is 45 cm tall, 45 cm wide and 45 cm deep, would this be bog enough, or do I need to buy a larger pot (which requires a very speedy dangerous trip to the gardening centre)

To the garden centre.

Spendy trip, but will aim for speedy

I've had a few star jasmine along our back fence for about 4 years and it doesn't seem to be taking over at all. How much growth is too much for you? Our fence is only 2m tall.

Thanks, that's good to know! It's not for a fence, but maybe I'll buy another for the fence GrinI plan to plant it next to my patio to grow up the side of my house.

Not very speedy in my experience at all! But do keep an eye on tying them in otherwise they can flop forwards. Their stems get woody so it's hard to correct this later.

Lovely plants mind.

Mine is the slowest growing thing in my garden. It’s been here 5 years, is only 1.5m high and has never flowered. I just told it earlier today that its days might be numbered if it doesn’t buck up its ideas! No idea where I’m going wrong with it.

I've have two.One in a large pot against a south facing wall that has grown verywell and flowered reasonably last year. After 3 years.Although it's leaves get a but sun bleached.
The other was planted in a mainly sunny border against an obelisk and that's been very slow to take off and barely flowered. I have just planted a clematis on the other side of the obelisk and when that gets going I may move the star jasmine elsewhere -unless it performs better this year.

I have one in a massive pot which was here when I moved 4 years ago. It's about 1m tall and barely appears to grow, but does flower reliably. I'm planning to put in in the ground at some point in hopes it will get bigger with more root space. It's a pain being in a pot because of the watering requirements in the summer.

They are very easily controlled in the UK, so no container needed. In fact you'll be wondering about its slowness for quite some while. Here in Melbourne they're often used as ground cover in municipal planting. arching up to about two feet and growing densely.

Catabogus · 08/05/2021 09:47

Is it the lack of sun that means it doesn’t flower? Mine is in dappled shade for much of the day. Perhaps I need to move it.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 08/05/2021 11:13

Mine is in part shade and flowers. They are always listed as a plant for shady places

Catabogus · 08/05/2021 12:43

Argh that’s what I thought! So perhaps I’ve just got a dud?

TheNoodlesIncident · 08/05/2021 17:47

How often do you feed it Catabogus? I give my jasmine at least two liquid feeds in the growing season plus a dressing of shrub fertilise.

It's on a west facing fence and probably gets more sun than it wants frankly. Its leaves do look a little yellow and should be darker green, as it would be in shade.

Catabogus · 08/05/2021 18:04

Oh maybe that’s it! I give it a manure mulch twice in the growing season but haven’t fed it apart from that.

WobblyLondoner · 08/05/2021 18:35

@BewareTheBeardedDragon I usually see it recommended for sun or partial shade. It certainly has done better for me at the sunny end of the garden.

It's always included in lists like this for shady climbers - not full shade granted but it's always there. I'm sure it flowers more in full sun - many things do but it can certainly cope with some shade. Smile
