Dahlias not sprouting - should I bring them in?

First time to grow dahlias from tubers. I think I should have kept them indoors jljntilnthey started to sprout, but they’ve been outside since I planted them into pots a fortnight ago. They’re not doing anything - shapeless I bring them in? Daytime or just overnight? I am in the south east.

following as I just planted some this weekend into pots. Mind you I'm not even sure if I planted the correct way round - first time planting them and was expecting a bulb

YanTanTethera123 · 05/05/2021 11:57

Mine haven’t shown any sign of growth and I have them in pots in the greenhouse and in pots outside ☹️
I’m honestly considering giving up trying to grow the b*rs as this is the 4th attempt!

YanTanTethera123 · 05/05/2021 11:58

I’m in the southwest and potted them up probably a month ago after Monty Don did his on GW. I bet his grow!

NotAQueef · 05/05/2021 12:06

Google says it can take approx 5 weeks for tubers to sprout, and I expect with the unseasonable chill that could be longer so don't give up hope yet!

WellTidy · 05/05/2021 12:11

So - should I bring them in, do you think?! Daytime and overnight? Just overnight?

Weather forecast is improving. You'll probably be OK.

WellTidy · 05/05/2021 12:17

Thanks - I hope so! Never grown them from tubers before, just picked some up mid summer in the garden centre for £10 or so a pot. My tubers are from wilko, so super cheap. Fingers crossed.

I would take them indoors. I've got some growing from tubers and some I grew from seed and none of them are outside yet. All are growing well, but I am a lot further north and you, OP, so have to be more cautious.

TonTonMacoute · 05/05/2021 13:06

If they're in pots bring them in. I haven't even planted mine yet.

It's just still so darned cold everywhere. I'm sure that as soon as the weather warms up things will take off very quickly.

FoolsAssassin · 05/05/2021 17:50

I’d bring them in, we south coast and forecast 1 degree tonight. My dahlias are shooting but tucked up in a propagator in a summer house.

WellTidy · 05/05/2021 18:12

I’ve brought them in! They’re in the laundry room on a massive carrier bag as they’re wet from the rain. Along with my few bedding plants and the runner beans and peas. I’m going to start having to call it something else soon as there’s no much space left for laundry.

Am I right in thinking not to feed the dahlias until they shoot up?

Mine are just showing small shoots now, they’re in the greenhouse.

movingquandry · 05/05/2021 21:13

Mine are inside and done nuffink

SpacePotato · 06/05/2021 00:56

I got some tubers from wilko too, the pastel ones, half were damaged but planted them anyway. Got one shoot so far. About 5cm now. Couple of others have new growth beneath the surface.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 06/05/2021 07:14

I did mine inside and one of them looks like it is about to flower! I’m a bit worried that they are massively early though and suspect the perfect Dahlia is probably not as far along.

Looking like it is warming up a bit next week (especially at night). Everything in my garden is behind by a few weeks, so I wouldn’t be panicking just yet.

MereDintofPandiculation · 06/05/2021 09:47

I was working on the principle that the tubers are underground and insulated by the soil in the pots. By the time they're showing we'll be in the second half of May, and temperatures are forecast to be normal for the time of year.

If your tubers had above-ground shoots my advice would have been to bring them in. But that would mean that would mean that they'd probably be used to rather warmer temperatures, so would mean they'd need to be hardened off before putting back out.

WellTidy · 06/05/2021 12:02

One of the pots is really heavy and large; too big really for me to have in the laundry room given how many other things are in there. So the bigger one will now have to go outside, and the two smaller ones can stay in. An experiment! I will see how they do. They were only £5 or so for the lot, but I would like to be able to grow them from tubers successfully.

I have four in the ground and never lifted them since planting three years ago. This year two have sprouted and two haven't so I wonder if the frost has killed them off. South East and sheltered garden.

Elouera · 06/05/2021 12:08

I bought loads of tubers from aldi and lidl in march and planted them in early April. All are in pots- some outside, some inside an unheated room. None have sprouted at all! I'm in the Sth East.

Bedsheets4knickers · 06/05/2021 12:26

I planted begonias in pots about a month ago . Just dug them all up and bought the plants . I'm clearly useless with bulbs

octoberfarm · 06/05/2021 12:42

Dahlias won't do much until it warms up, so they might just need some more time. If it looks to get below freezing or if it's very wet, keep them inside. You don't want them getting too much water before they've sprouted as they're prone to rot, and freezing temperatures will ruin them too. They can be a bit finicky, but they're easy once they're growing and so beautiful once they start flowering!

Proudboomer · 06/05/2021 14:16

Just checked my dahlias. The ones in the ground and last years pots are just beginning to sprout. My new ones sitting in trays of compost have no sign of growth yet.
Just gave the sprouting ones a liquid feed and left the others and will check them again in a weeks time.

Harrysmummy246 · 06/05/2021 15:20

Mine, grown from tubers are still inside. NW has had a lot of hail and still possibility of frost forecast. They'll be gradually hardened off for the rest of this month if it improves a bit, and planted out next month.

madroid · 07/05/2021 21:37

Get them out again this weekend - the forecast is it's getting warmer! Yipee bout time too

ichundich · 07/05/2021 21:45

I've grown mine indoors, but they took between 2 and 5 weeks to sprout. If yours habe been outside the whole time, the frost might have killed them, but hopefully not! I would perhaps start a few more just in case. They'll probably grow faster now as it's getting warmer at last.
