Like so many I discovered the joy of gardening during lockdown. I planted this rose last year but now the leaves look wankey (techincal term!)

I've been on the RHS site but it didn't show wankey leaves just spots/mildew etc. Please can anyone help.
Info: in pot, fed regularly.

I am a total novice but could the wankiness just be from the cold? I am told that’s what’s happened to my magnolia and some other brown looking leaves.

A lot of plants have suffered from the late frosts in April, and this could be the case here. Pruning roses 9s always a good idea but most gardeners are being extra cautious the is year and waiting another 2 weeks.

You mention that you use RHS,so refer to that site for pruning instructions and remember you can propagate any cuttings to make new plants.

Ah bollocks I pruned mine ages ago I wonder if they're about to up and die Sad

PansyIvy · 02/05/2021 15:44

No it’s normal to prune roses in Winter

PansyIvy · 02/05/2021 15:46

Sorry, posted too soon. Does it have lots of new growth? Beware of over feeding. Are you in the UK?

LockdownGardener · 02/05/2021 15:58

Thanks all, I did wonder if the cold was an issue but its very sheltered. I am in the UK, hadn't thought about over feeding, this could definitely be an issue as I'm a little over keen.

Really trying to make use of the RHS it's been a steep learning curve, am I awe of people with beautiful gardens I never realised how much time and skill was required.

I can see some new shoots so I think I'd be inclined to ignore the wankey leaves!
I've got two roses in my garden and I treat them exactly the same. Feed, prune etc and one has lovely shiny dark green leaves with not a mark on them but the other always has some sort of crisis going on. Black spots, yellow spots, die back.
It's still alive!
As a beginner, I would suggest a big feed of fish, bone and blood and master the art of pruning to get vigorous growth and a good shape.

Beebumble2 · 02/05/2021 16:22

I’d give it a prune, I lightly prune mine in Autumn and then more seriously in April. This gets rid of the old redundant shoots that won’t flower, taking the old winters leaves away.
Roses are tough plants, many only begin to flower in June so leaving redundant stems on only weakens the plant.

LockdownGardener · 02/05/2021 16:35

Thank you, I've gone and hacked pruned it, taken off the worst looking leaves and left the new shoots, do think over feeding maybe an issue so will be less caring going forward.

Plants do not take up food until temperatures are consistently above 10 degrees, and feeding something sickly can do more harm than good.

The scabby-looking leaves are last year's and roses grow new ones every year so cut them off and dispose of them. If there's any sign of disease (mildew, rust or blackspot) then don't compost them, throw them away.
