Anyone leave garden furniture out all winter?

I thought I'd ask the collective minds of Mumsnet before I make a decision Wink.
I am looking to buy a new garden furniture set. I have seen some small teak sets that fold for around £600. But for around the same price I can get a chunky, more solid looking Scandinavian redwood set that is more substantial both in size and how sturdy it looks.

But the latter won't be able to be stored in a shed. I don't have a garage. Is this a bad idea? I fully expect I'd have to clean and oil it annually which is fine.

I like both sets. But the larger one seems a much much better deal to me. I expect I'm missing something though. Any thoughts?

Ours (about 8 Lutyens benches in oak and 3 tables) are permanently outside.

They do get manky looking after winter so we either jet wash them or just scrub them with a brush each spring.

After the first oiling I couldn’t be bothered to do it again.

Most of them are almost 10 years old and still solid.

We have a team set that's been outside for probably 15 years. Pressure wash it once a year and it's fine. Might start that today actually. We've never oiled it.

Teak I mean.

Thank you. Both sound lovely! I'm on a limited budget though.
Does anyone know anything about Scandinavian redwood? This is a lot of money for me and worried about it not lasting. The set I currently have is at least 15 years old, metal and glass. It's spent the whole time outside. I appreciate wood will need more looking after. I don't want to make an expensive mistake!

You can buy outdoor furniture covers that we just chuck over around October time and weigh the edges down with a couple of bricks and then we remove the covers in March.

Not sure if this helps or not, but we have this one (metal and granite) and it's been outside year round for at least 7 years now. I just wipe it down occasionally with a damp cloth..

We have chunky outdoor furniture which stays permanently outdoors, uncovered - the person who sold it to us said never to cover it as it encourages damp and mould. Had it five years now, teak oil it when I remember. Had to tighten some of the bolts on it this spring for the first time ever. It does get very dry from weathering so oiling it really helps it look good and feel good - there's a noticeable change in texture from dry and scratchy to much smoother and tactile feeling. It takes ages to do though and stinks so try and do it before you think you'll want to sit outside!

Where we live everyone keeps their furniture outside and puts a furniture cover it all over winter.

It survives-20 plus and heavy snow.

We have some heavy furniture which has been outside for at least 12 years. Never oil it as I prefer the look of unoiled. If the spring we scrub it with washing up liquid and then pressure wash. It looks beautiful. The parasol fabric is coming to the end of its life though. I would love to find a new fabric as the wooden parts are perfect.

Oh just seen all these replies! Thank you Flowers

I ended up buying a second hand teak set. It does fold so in theory, I could put it away. It's been outside permanently and oiled most years so looks in good condition. I also feel better not spending all that money. Time will tell!
