5 year Anniversary- buying a tree to commemorate

I know, I know. It's a bit cheesy.

But the material is wood and we thought for each 5 year milestone we would go with the theme of whichever material it was.

So we thought a tree would be nice. Neither of us like gifts for the sake of gift giving but we both love our garden.

We have a budget of £50. We love Japanese maples but they are quite pricey. We can extend budget a bit if needed. Any suggestions of pretty trees we can buy young and can be transplanted if we move in next 2/3 years? Any recommended websites to purchase from?

Thanks in advance.

A dwarf fruit tree?

It was our 4th anniversary which is supposed to be 'fruit and flowers', so I bought my husband a Crab Apple tree sapling for our garden.

It was under £50 including delivery and we've planted in a large pot for the time being, as we are doing some work to our garden this summer and once we're done we'll put it in it's permanent position.

Apparently they can live in large pots/containers for up to 5 years quite happily. So could make moving easier?

They are supposed to be quite hardy, easy to care for trees and put a really beautiful display of blossoms in spring and fruits in the autumn.

What a great idea! In those circumstances I'd be tempted to get a patio fruit tree then you don't have to worry about transplanting it later. I've bought a patio pear tree this year which was less than £20.

I forgot to say, Crab Apples are the "symbolic" tree of love and marriage.

I live my cherry tree. It's been in a pot for 5 years and blossoms beautifully and we even get cherries. You could keep one in a large pot and then plant when you move.

The RHS website has a brilliant search facility. There are small Japanese maples that look great in pots but there are other varieties to choose from. It’s a great site for browsing.

I was coming to say we bought a beautiful weeping crabapple tree and it really is lovely. It is still potted as we will not be here permanently. It was bought as a memorial tree and it is just lovely.

The very best tree I e ever bought and planted is an ornamental winter flowering cherry. You get the autumn colour followed by a whole winter of blossom, just when everything is dormant. Mine is still flowering now and it started in November.

Wow! Thank you for all the replies Flowers

Me and DH are going to enjoy picking our anniversary gift later. So much choice. I do love the idea of a patio fruit tree and it's not something I would have thought about.

Will have a butchers at the RHS search as well @PresentingPercy

Happy anniversary!

We planted a small rowan (Sorbus Olympic flame) for our 5 year anniversary a few weeks ago. We've also got a little crab apple (Malus Laura) which was a wedding present and it always flowers around this time of year.

It's a lovely time of year for trees - loads with blossom or beautiful new leaves. It's worth going to a good garden centre or botanical gardens/arboretum on or around your anniversary and seeing what looks best. Then you could have something that looks great on your anniversary every year.

@JofraArchersFastestBall

Oh how lovely! Glad to hear other couple think like us. We are actually going between a crab apple and a small rowan tree. We love the choice of colours.

Thank you so much x

Do be aware Rowan berries are poisonous if eaten by dogs.

RampantIvy · 02/05/2021 07:13

I made some delicious crab apple jelly last year BTW.

Xtraincome · 02/05/2021 15:08

Thanks @PresentingPercy. We don't have a dog (yet) but will keep that in mind.

Yum to crab apple jelly- good selling point there :-)
