My favourite is the "Welcome to Yorkshire" Garden from the Chelsea flower show

Beebumble2 · 30/04/2021 13:40

Full bloom a couple of years ago, it does change depending what has seeded itself.

@Beebumble2 beautiful 😍

Do you have to chop it back at all each year or does it largely take care of itself?

It largely takes care of itself, but sometimes things just disappear and I replace them with something different. If a plant does well, I try to put in a different variety of that plant. It’s all a bit trial and error.
I also add annuals started off in the greenhouse
I’ve not had the garden very long and this was a bed I created after cutting down Leyllandi and clearing the weedy mess.

Beautiful

WheresMyClint · 30/04/2021 15:04

Gorgeous pics. I'm turning my front garden into a cottage style so this is great inspiration!

3orangekissesfromkazan · 30/04/2021 15:52

@MargotandJerrywerehot that is so gorgeous!

I am a massive fan of 'wild' gardens tgat aren't too cultivated with lots of colour and different textures etc

I had a go at a wildflower side of the garden last year.

Hoping it will come back again this summer.

That looks amazing 3orange - I’m trying to create something similar down one side of my garden too. Will see if anything grows in a few weeks!

MargotandJerrywerehot · 30/04/2021 16:30

I love the red and blue. I'm trying to do a 'meadow' this year but it's been so dry that I fear nothing will emerge.

DiddlyWiddly · 30/04/2021 16:42

What is in it?
I can see geums which should definately come back as those are hardy perennials.

And forget me not which should self seed reliably every year so that should come back.

Is the dark blue salvia?
There’s a good chance that will come back.

If the daisies are ox eye they should come back too

I've got a tiny London garden with cottage garden dreams

That’s so pretty Oopourus just shows how beautiful a small space can be.

3orangekissesfromkazan · 30/04/2021 18:13

@DiddlyWiddly from memory geraniums, daisy's, forget-me-nots (which have sprung up of their own accord..loads up this year so far!)..um..some purple ferny-lookingthings..I'm a bit rubbish with the names of plants! I tend to just go to my local garden centre and pick what I like the look of and hope for the best!

I also scattered a few bee-bombs about last year on the other side of the garden which did really well..much more sun on that side.

@OooPourUsACupLove you garden is beautiful..I'm in London too, and am really blessed with a decent sized, west-facing garden. It was just a rectangle of brown mud and weeds when we moved in though!

DiddlyWiddly · 30/04/2021 18:20

If they were ‘hardy’ geraniums then they should come back, the ‘daisies’ it depends what type.
Ox eyes are usually reliably perennial, marguerite daisies are not.

OooPourUsACupLove · 30/04/2021 19:59

@Beebumble2 thank you. The photos do it a lot of favours (and don't show how many plants have short sad lives in the wrong place!) but when it's full of life it makes me really happy.

@3orangekissesfromkazan that sounds lovely. Mine is south facing but with the buildings around it's quite shady, especially now the apple tree is a good size. I love your wildflowers. I wish I had space to do that as well.

Beebumble2 · 30/04/2021 20:06

Ooopour I too have the fatal disasters, but I have found that Astrantias are very forgiving and seem to provide the lovely cottage frothy aspect of cottage gardens.

Yogaposer · 30/04/2021 20:15

I am so jealous of your beautiful gardens...... I inadvertently kill most things I attempt to grow in mine, apart from the bastard Mint (that will outlive us all).

3orangekissesfromkazan · 30/04/2021 21:04

A pic of the garden when we moved in nearly 2 years ago, and pics from last summer. The lawn needs re-turfing, but looking forward to seeing what comes through this year.

3orange I looked at the first photo and thought Mmm I wonder if they changed the fence ?

You have and you've added the No1 Garden Feature : A Cat Grin

3orangekissesfromkazan · 01/05/2021 10:06

@70isaLimitNotaTarget haha yes every garden needs a cat!

My OH replaced the fence, he had a go at laying the patio too, but gave up! We're going to be having sn extension built at some point so will re address that then.

I planted an astrantia (Penny's Pink) and it has done nothing at all yet. I'm hoping it's just been a bit too cold for it up till now.

The dark blue salvia that it was going to look fantastic next to appears to be doing well though, typically.

No matter how carefully you plan your planting, nature will still thwart you!

OooPourUsACupLove · 02/05/2021 23:07

I have a couple of astrania. They've never really flowered much because they always get overpowered by something else, but I've moved some stuff this year to give them space and they look a bit perkier than usual this spring so fingers crossed. I'll be a bit more brutal keeping self-seeded stuff away from them - see if that helps.

The two that thrive in my garden are love-in-a-mist and poppies. I sowed them about 7 years ago and they have been coming back ever since.

The foxgloves I planted at the same time were less successful. They continue to turn up all over the place and they flower fine but they are so huge and look so raggy at the bottom, they don't really work in the space. They look so lovely in other gardens but I think they need to be at the back of deep beds to hide their ugly feet. Some day I'll try a smaller variety.
