We had joy, we had fun, we had tulips in the sun

But the sun was so hot
That the tulips soon were shot.

These red tulips popped up among the grape hyacinths a few weeks ago and looked great. They didn't last long - neither did the hyacinths soon after - and might it be because there's blazing sun in the front? Are tulips just not particularly hardy? Should I replant them? It's a shame because they really did look good in that setting.

tulips often don't last long. mine get eaten by the squirrels.

try salvia hot lips if you want something that lasts a long time & is red & likes a sunny spot. No flowers until later in the year though.

This might sound daft but did you water them? It was so dry with no rainfall for such a long time. My tulips and daffodils lasted the same length of time as usual but I was watering them every other day. Plants do need more when they're in flower, it's an extra "expense" for them.

I'm now watering with tomato feed in to feed the bulbs for next year. Next year's flower bud is developing in the centre of the bulb already, so feeding them while the foliage is still green is beneficial.

(I also snip off the tops if the fertilisation took place, to stop the bulb wasting energy making useless seeds.)

My hyacinths have been out a long time - they cam out with the daffodils and are still going. They're in dappled shade and the soil is still moist below the surface. So they haven't got too hot or too dry. Tulips have lasted a long while too. One of the clumps is in the hedge - I've no idea how it got there.
