Hi...this is the side of my house on the front ..it was just soil. Have stoned it but just looks too plain.

I know what I DON'T want...I don't want plants, I dont want pots of plants, I dont want climbing plants on side of house.

What do.you think?

Several large craggy stones and a low-growing spreading juniper would be my suggestion. No maintenance for any of that.

GloomyWaters · 25/04/2021 11:55

Like the idea of large craggy stones...

Only a matter of time before someone goes and parks there or kids play on it. I think it needs to not be open to the pavement for starters. Is it loose or bonded gravel?

Bluntness100 · 25/04/2021 11:56

I’d fence it off too. It looks like a car parking space.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 25/04/2021 11:56

Someone will probably nick large stones, especially with the area not fenced off. Some are bold enough to start dismantling walls near us - semi-rural area.

Solar lights?

ClaireEclair · 25/04/2021 12:16

It’s depressing that some people don’t want plants or gardens anymore. Around here everyone seems to be paving over their front gardens or putting fake grass down. Ours is full of wildflowers (weeds) and full of bees. I love it. I’m not much of a gardener either but much prefer wild mess than nothing. I hope you reconsider and add a few lovely potted plants, maybe a bench, bird table or bird bath.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 25/04/2021 12:27

I can't really tell where the space is in relation to your house, would it be an appropriate place to put a wooden bin storage area? You can even get them with a green roof that could be planted with a low maintenance plant like lavendar which would smell good in the summer.

didireallysaythat · 25/04/2021 12:40

You might do better posting on the home decoration threads - if you don't want plants the thread full of gardeners might not give you inspiration?

viques · 25/04/2021 12:47

I think you need to watch QVC, they always have loads of plastic
—crap— ornaments for people to clutter up their gardens with. Sorry, preposition, not re writing the whole sentence.

I can’t see what the problem is about pots myself.

Other suggestions

An old mattress or two

A clapped out Ford cortina

A freezer, make sure the door is secured.

Your bins.

A replica of the Trevi Fountain? You could collect the coins for gin charidee.

Floralnomad · 25/04/2021 13:00

I would put an ornamental type chain link fence around it , then despite you saying no plants I’d dig through a couple of areas and plant hardy geraniums as they grow anywhere and will spread but in an attractive way if you just leave them alone . Anything that isn’t nailed down will likely get nicked so I wouldn’t bother with large stones / statues .

JaneJeffer · 25/04/2021 13:21

Something like these?

Are large stones likely to be stolen, surely they'd be too heavy? Do some of you live near thieves who resemble Dwayne Johnson?

Agree with pp - definitely fence it off or it will be used as a dog loo/path off to cut off the corner. And yes, alpines would look nice but be low maintenance.

Bluntness100 · 25/04/2021 14:21

Personally I’d dig a hole in the middle and plant a cherry blossom or apple tree.

MrsBertBibby · 25/04/2021 14:33

Big stones cost a lot, and there are plenty of thieves with lifting gear.

Floralnomad · 25/04/2021 15:35

If people can steal huge concrete statues , which they do , I’m fairly sure they could steal a few big rocks . Thieves will steal anything if they think they can sell it .

Thighdentitycrisis · 25/04/2021 17:36

I think your rockery idea is good but does it have enough sun?

GloomyWaters · 25/04/2021 17:56

Tons of sun

burritofan · 25/04/2021 18:02

I know you don’t want plants but you’ve got tons of sun! And all that space! Get rid of the gravel, which is just a litter tray, and do a great big rose garden. Lots of shrub roses, mostly of the same type. Extra-spiky fuckers closest to the pavement so no one’s tempted to wander in/let their dog poo/nick stuff. Fairly low maintenance and all the maintenance is of the same type if it’s all one plant.

cakeandteajustforme · 25/04/2021 18:07

Surely the best thing for that spot is a sun living tree smack in the middle? Something very low maintenance but pretty, that can take the weather?

And so it stays low maintenance, something relatively slow-growing and non-invasive. A magnolia, for instance? A cherry? An olive?

nancywhisky · 25/04/2021 18:09

A wishing well.

cakeandteajustforme · 25/04/2021 18:10

Sun-loving... autocorrect!
