Hi I'm teaching plants this term (infants), and we are going to be planting seeds in bags rather like this.

In everything I've read, it suggests planting beans, which I'm happy to do. I was wondering though whether sunflowers would start off this way? Was thinking that way once they've started we can put into little pots in compost and each child would have something to take home at the end of term.

What else would work for this investigation? Thank you

I think sunflowers would work. Squash or pumpkin might also work.

Sunflowers, sweet peas, peas, all work. Cress in eggshells also good for a v quick result.

Nothing to stop you putting beans in little pots to take home. Not enough to make a meal but those that are interested should get them to flowering size and then see the beans form.

Nasturtiums are another big seed that might work.

Pumpkin germinates really fast but the seedlings quickly get huge and a little bit prickly.

Sunflowers are lovely but they will need support as they grow. Beans are a little easier to handle IMO (I am not good with tall seedlings though)

Sow pumpkin or squash in a pot for the classroom because it will come up really fast and that will be exciting.
