Help. My dahlia tubers haven't sprouted

Hello wise garden elves. I've never grown dahlias before. I got some tubers, put in pots , covered with a couple of cm of compost and watered every so often. 1 kept in unheated greenhouse, the others in warm kitchen. Neither has sprouted.

Do you think this is a duff batch or am I doing something wrong?

Your help appreciated.

Thanks !

When did you plant them, there’s no sign of mine either, wasn’t really expecting them yet.

Proudboomer · 24/04/2021 08:39

Still early for dahlia. I have some left in the ground over winter and some new ones in the greenhouse. None of them have sparked into life yet.

I don't know much about dahlias, second year here, but I potted mine up, watered them and left them until I saw foliage. Just rummage around and check to see if any of the tubers are squidgy/rotten and if they are cut them off. I don't think they like much water when they're thinking about growing. But am no expert!

Proudboomer · 24/04/2021 08:44

Oh and stop watering them until you see them sprouting. They don’t need watering until then and you run the risk of rotting them.

Imnotverygoodatallthis · 24/04/2021 08:45

And I think they can take different amounts of time. Patience is not one of my virtues....😝

I bought agapanthus dead roots and begonia corms and nothing has come of them. I’m only going for plants in future.

Too early, and depending where you are, still too cold. We still had frost this week in Scotland so I think everything is going to be slightly later this year.

Still too early for the begonias. The agapanthus if in a greenhouse would be showing signs of life by now but if you put it straight in the garden the frost has probably killed it.

Mine haven't sprouted after last year. Never had dahlias before though. I'm going for the benign neglect approach.

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/04/2021 09:39

My dahlias are about 3 inches tall, but based on previous experience that's astonishingly early. So don't worry just yet.

Proudboomer · 24/04/2021 09:42

Dahlias are really easy. Wait till they start spouting then plant and put a sturdy stake next to them. As they grow keep tying the plant to the stake as wind and the weight of the plant can snap them. Once flowering either cut the blooms or dead head often to encourage more flowers and you should have a lovely display right through summer and into October.

Thanks everyone. I'll stop watering them and wait. I'm not good at waiting though !

My begonias in the greenhouse are sprouting Grin so some tuber success !

Enjoy this lovely day for gardening everyone

I moved some of my Dahlias today into, a garden tub. Just the ones that are sprouting. I accidentally dug up a few others and notice that they are nicely forming roots. I am too impatient it expect.

Happyschool · 24/04/2021 18:14

I didn’t know about the not watering so had been watering lots (planted my first dahlias in pots outdoors and it’s been really sunny) and shoots appeared about 3 days ago and growing well

TheDogsMother · 24/04/2021 18:22

Another from the benign neglect school of gardening. I don't lift ours and DH was convinced we'd killed them. Dahlias are relatively late to sprout and a couple of days ago I saw a green leaf pop up. They will be fine but top tip from PP about the staking. Get something in place early.

lightlypoached · 24/04/2021 21:29

Checked mine. One of the pots the tubers were hollow and soggy so I threw them away. The other still look solid but is dry and stilll inactive. Will see if it does anything and most likely write off to experience.

Gosh I didn’t realise they like stakes too as a bit bored of making stakes for my peonies! (This is my first year of trying to grow flowers).
I had better go foraging for more hazel sticks tomorrow and thank you for the tip!
