Got this stumpy tree in my garden- what is it?

Hi all- in our new garden we have this tree. I’ve attached pics in the hope that someone can ID it. It seems someone has chopped bits off of it?! I’d be happy to have a full tree but this weird half chopped off tree is a bit funny looking....

Picture with the leaves breaking looks like a tree peony.

That might be Rhus/Stag's Horn Sumach. It's on my Loathed List as it spreads by suckering shoots from its root system, so you get new trees starting to grow all round. The leaves go a nice red in autumn, but there are plenty of other trees available that have lovely autumn colour without the damn nuisance of spreading all over.

this is going to be the most useless reply you will get ,because i dont have a clue , i dont know what half the stuff is in my own garden , but i did want to say its kinda cute . esp its furry branches and new leaves coming in . if it was in my garden id be watching it with great interest to see how it will progress

Sumac is lovely, Just keep pulling it up.

Tree peony is really special. Don't risk losing that!

GoldRhino · 21/04/2021 06:52

I noticed there is another bit of it shooting up elsewhere in the garden. Do I need to get someone round to get rid of it?

Was going to suggest sycamore.
Whatever it is, it’s too close to the fence.

picklemewalnuts · 21/04/2021 06:55

No, just grab and pull. My parents had sumac for years. Theirs was hard to get at, but filled an ugly corner. They just had to cut it back and pull bits up at intervals. Yours is already well cut back. Perhaps do it more sympathetically next year, so it's a better shape over winter.

Mowing the grass will take care of that area, and then pull shoots that pop up from the ground in places you don't want them.

It's got lovely velvety bark.
