Planting my potted olive tree

I've got a small potted olive tree - Olea Europaea if that makes any difference. It's looking a little sad and I was thinking about sticking it in the ground. Do you think it will like this?

I think it'll depend on where you are planning to plant it. If it's in a south facing position with lots of sun, then it'll probably be fine. If not, probably not.
Have you tried feeding it? Or repotting it? Do you have a photo?

PeanutbutterPickle · 19/04/2021 22:23

I planted mine in the front garden a few years ago and it has thrived.

Somewhere sunny with good drainage. Wet feet over winter will do for it.

Does it just need a repot? Fresh compost could do it. Also check for vine weevils in the container.little buggers.

I moved mine to a much bigger pot, kept it in a sunny corner, water it regularly and feed it occasionally. It has doubled in size since last spring.
The original pot was too small.

I agree that the potential issue is wet feet over winter. I have clay soil that is often very wet over winter, so my olive tree stays in a pot.

What do you use to feed them? I bought an olive tree from Aldi of all places.
Says not for human consumption?
I want to keep it small so when do I prune it ?

porridgecake · 20/04/2021 11:54

I use GroMore for all my garden plants. I have never pruned my olive tree though - it is about 3 feet high now, so I won't worry until it is at least 4 ft.

GrumpyHoonMain · 20/04/2021 11:55

I would keep it potted so you can move it indoors in winter.

EscapeDragon · 20/04/2021 16:53

I've got several in pots that were outside all winter. Some are doing well. I think there are two that have unexpectedly kicked the bucket after several years of being fine.

deplorabelle · 20/04/2021 19:30

There is no need to bring a potted olive inside in winter. It will not like that at all!

Mizydoscape · 20/04/2021 19:41

I've had it about 3 years and it's never been inside

Sorry it's quite hard to see against the background. It's about 3 feet tall

That definitely needs repotting, needs a much much bigger pot. Like knee height and 18 inches wide.

Mizydoscape · 20/04/2021 20:26

@ChiefBabySniffer oh wow really that big? It would be a bit big for the garden that's why I was thinking of planting it in the soil it's stood on at the moment.

I had one like this, I put it into the ground not expecting much and it has literally quadrupled in size over 4-5 years, looks amazing now.

ChiefBabySniffer · 20/04/2021 21:27

If it's goingto go in the ground then make sure it's got enough space and really throw a load of decent compost into the hole. Water the hole and let it soak, then water it again. Gently tease the root ball after soaking and then plant it out. Give it a few feeds to establish it and it should go great providing its well drained and sunny.
