A plant (tree?) ID

This has appeared in my garden, it looks like a tree. Does anyone have any ideas what it is? It looks quite nice where it is but don't want to keep it if it's going to end up being massive.

Looks like a Hazel sapling. Could have grown out of aunt buried by a squirrel.

Beebumble2 · 17/04/2021 18:46

Not an Aunt called Hazel Grin but a nut!

Honeywort · 17/04/2021 18:49

Agree definitely hazel

LIZS · 17/04/2021 18:54

We've got similarly planted about three or four years ago - now 6 foot tall but not too bulky,

Thank you. How big do hazels tend to grow? It's quite close to a lilac so not sure if it'll be too squashed.

You can prune them fairly hard and keep it within bounds.

Hazels can be coppiced, ie every few
years cut them near the base with sloping cuts so the rain runs off and they will re-shoot.

They grow as a shrub ie with several stems from the bottom, and eventually can get to about 20ft high and wide. But you'll not often see them like that as they usually are coppiced, even by people managing areas for wildlife and diversity.

Thank you all. I've now found three of them! A squirrel has clearly been very forgetful when burying his nuts.
