Plant ID again

Can anyone tell me what both these plants are? The one at the front has poppy like leaves but too early for poppy and what's the one at the back which is like a flowering spike and virtually no leaves?

Both growing in a shady border along a wall.

Thanks Smile

The tall pale pink flowers look like Berginia, but they’re known as Elephants ears and have large ear like leaves, which yours don’t. The smaller plant looks like a type of scabious. Although it’s very early for it to flower.
Someone with just the right knowledge will be along soon.

Pinkywoo · 17/04/2021 08:52

The pale pink flowers look like they could be an alium of some sort, could you get a clearer picture of the flower of the frondy one?

Bluntness100 · 17/04/2021 08:55

I actually thought these were weeds, I habe some popped up in my garden.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 17/04/2021 09:02

Pale pink looks like umbrella plant (a type of saxifrage). Here’s a pic of it on wildflower finder for you to compare.

The other one looks a bit like some sort of thistle?

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 17/04/2021 09:12

Oh maybe not umbrella, just realised those leaves look wrong.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 17/04/2021 09:14

Unless the long grassy looking leaves are not the same plant? Looking at the other flower heads they look like there’s no leafy base - in which case I’ll stick with the umbrella plant guess Smile

MereDintofPandiculation · 17/04/2021 09:21

Hmm, not convinced by the umbrella plant. OPs flower seems to have 6 petals whereas the saxifrages have 5 petals, which sounds trivial but is a pretty fundamental difference. Six petals would be right for Allium but aren’t Allium petals usually more pointed? Are the linear leaves part of it?

The other looks as if it is in the Asteraceae, the daisy/thistle family, somewhere in the knapweed/scabious region. Possibly a Knautia.

Beekeeper1 · 17/04/2021 09:29

Agree with meredint that the one at the front looks very much like knautia, possibly Knautia macedonica, certainly a knapweed or scabious.

Is it possible to have some more pictures of the foliage of the rear one please?

Porseb · 17/04/2021 15:51

I took these in a walk so will get some better pics when I'm next there.

The pale pink one seems to have no leaves, has a fuzzy stem which just pops out of ground.

The one in front has a thistle like flower

If it’s a thistle flower, I think it’s more likely to be cirsium rivulare. Knautia has a pinhead flower like a scabious.

Janedownourlane · 17/04/2021 18:03

Could it be echinops? Has a thistle like leaf with blue/purple globe shaped flowers.

NineOClockOnASaturday · 17/04/2021 18:50

Definitely not an echinops, which is months away from flowering.

FrDamo · 17/04/2021 20:06

The pink one with the hairy stem (OO-er missus) is definitely the umbrella plant (peltiphyllum). I have it in my garden. There will be significant thick rootstock and large rhubarb like leaves will eventually appear that will last all summer. It will spread slowly but surely. The flowers and stalks are certainly different but not spectacular by any means. I look forward to its appearance as a sure sign of spring (assuming I've got a daffodil/tulip blind spot)

l2b2 · 17/04/2021 20:08

The plant at the front looks like the poppy plant I've got in my garden.

FrDamo · 17/04/2021 20:20

I'm in agreement that the deep pink/purple flower at the front is a cirsium, a cultivated thistle.

FrDamo · 17/04/2021 20:23

The deep green strap leaves centrally in the photo could be liriope but without the flowers that is very much a guess.

Porseb · 17/04/2021 20:32

Thank-you - I looked up umbrella plant and that's definitely it - might have to find some space for it next spring on my garden

I don’t want to be rude but the plant at the front is nothing like a poppy - just look at the flower!

l2b2 · 17/04/2021 21:37

Didn't notice the flower, the leaves are very similar though.

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/04/2021 07:52

I'd agree with Cirsium rivulare.
