What can I plant to get back my privacy?

Neighbours have cleared their garden of trees and also landscaped so that their garden so a few feet higher than mine in places. I have so little privacy in the garden/back of the house now. Is there something I can plant along the fence that is pretty and will grow quickly that is not leylandii?

Probably need a bit more information about which way it faces, how big your garden is....

Putting something tall in could affect your light.

One way of doing it is to put trees, tall shrubs in that aren’t a hedge and are planted more round the garden. That draws the eye away. While they are establishing put a trellis up and grow some quick climbers along it.

Am I allowed to put a trellis up on their fence? It faces SW so gets a lot of sunshine from midday onwards. I don’t think I would lose much light but they have added so much height to their side, I’d like a few feet of privacy back.

The garden isn’t huge but not tiny either, it’s sloping.

Beech or laurel?
I love climbers like Clematis or honeysuckle, but you will need some sort of structure for them to climb up

I'd like to know this too please so sorry to jump on! I want to plant some shrubs that will grow above fence height. I'd be grateful for any recommendations of ones that are easy to maintain and can grow in a quite sheltered area.

Bamboo IN POTS (otherwise it will take over the world)

Amelia666 · 16/04/2021 12:23

Strategically placed Bamboo in pots?

Amelia666 · 16/04/2021 12:27

@DorotheaDiamond great minds! 😂

We have Star Jasmine. It’s an evergreen with delicious scented white flowers. You need a trellis structure underneath ideally, but we have trained ours on wire and hooks. I love it.

Buddleia can be excellent for screening and can grow really fast

Bamboo is a nightmare if you plant an evasive type hence pot suggestions. Not sure how quick it will grow in a pot though

You could grow something like mile-a-minute up a net or trellis

PeasNotBeans · 16/04/2021 14:08

I love Buddleia and I think it brings lots of bees s d butterflies.

You can’t put a trellis or grow anything up the fence without the owners permission.
A Philadelphus (mock orange) is quite fast growing and gets to about 2 metre will grow in full sun or part shade .

I planted bamboo in a big trough, now about 3-4 m high.

Yesisbui · 16/04/2021 15:16

Cherry Laurel. Very fast growth.

Portuguese Laurel. Medium/fast growth. Easy to maintain.

My potted black bamboo grows around 0.75 to 1m per year!

I'd choose a mix of evergreen and deciduous plants and probably add something prickly to the mix for a bit of security if it's easier to access your garden. You can use garden obelisks and wigwams of bamboo canes to support climbing plants.

Clematis Armandii, some laurel, pyracantha which is self supporting and can be trained to grow upwards - berries in winter and evil spikes to deter climbing over the fence.

I found this hedging website great for ideas and information, and their plants are great quality!

Leycesteria Formosa, known as pheasant berry, is a really fast growing plant. It has pretty hanging flower bracts and is easily kept to shape and height. I grow mine to fill a gap in a hedge and cut it down to a couple of feet for winter, it’s already starting to grow and will be at least 5ft by summer.

Evergreen panel trees.

gluenotsoup · 23/04/2021 11:49

Preached trees would be good but quite pricey

You can get planters with trellis at the back. I move mine round the garden so prying eyes can’t the children play. When I let things grow up our fence our neighbour snip them through the fence with her scissors Confused
