Lawn up to fence or should we edge it. If so, how?

So this is the dilemma. Do we turf the lawn right up to the fence panels? This would maximise lawn width (small garden) and we can neaten the edges with shears after mowing.

Or edge it? If so, with bricks? Gavel board/thin timber laid down) or Everedge and fill in the gap with stones?

Any ideas? A novice gardner here who is sick of their ugly garden and trying to give it a makeover!

All suggestions and ideas will be gratefully received :)

Fencing is expensive so to keep as much moisture away from its base I would edge it unless you already have concrete gravel boards that lift the fence away from the soil.
If not than I would have a small strip with a weed membrane and then either pebbles or concrete edging.

Thanks. Unfortunately, no concrete or even timber gravel boards. Will do as you suggest. Thanks!

Late to this but everedge for life :)

Forget the weed membrane. Nightmare stuff. Slap down some preemergent then gravel/stones

@LemonSwan why is weed membrane nightmare stuff? Trying to learn as much as I can! Also, Everedge... there's a steel shortage!

I am not against the use of chemicals in the garden but only on things that need them ie bamboo, horsetail and the like.
Using a preemergent will mean treating the area with chemicals a couple of times a year to keep it weed free. Use a membrane and pebbled and then just hand weed if you need to.

If you grass right up to the fence, you won't be able to mow to the edge and will need to find another way of cutting. So I'd go for an edging. I'd probably use a single row of bricks. Any edging needs to be the same height as the mown lawn, or slightly lower because you'll need the lawnmower to be able to hand over the edging - otherwise you'll just have the same "can't cut the edges" problem.

@Townorcountrysideliving

Because it stops weeds coming from below, but give it 6 months and you have fresh seeds on the surface which then grow into the weed membrane making weeding a real pain. You then cant get all the root if hand weeding and you end up pulling the weed membrane and it all becomes uneven and a real mess in a couple of years.

@LemonSwan ah, thanks for taking the time to explain. Good to know.
