Cherry blossom

I'm looking for a plant that looks similar to cherry blossoms that will survive cold winters and cold winds. Also a decent amount of rain. I can plant it where it will get a good 8 hours of sun in the summer.

Any ideas? I did try Google but it just talked about visiting Japan in different months.

Was going to say I've grown one in Scotland but I see I'm further down than you Smile
Have also just bought a new one online (as we'd moved house) - I just googled, they were called Gardening Express and am very happy with it so far.

Mine's a Prunus Triloba.
Just a wee lad so far!

Just to warn - I've had problems with gardening express. Supposed specimen plants that turned up after being in transit for 10 days and were basically twigs! Still waiting for them to decide whether to exchange

Oh that's no good Sad I've only ordered that one tree and it was fine. It was well boxed. Not sure why they don't just replace them for you, that would make me think twice about reordering.

NewbiePlanter · 15/04/2021 11:44

Oh they are so pretty. I could keep in a large pot indoors until it's grown a bit more then plant in the garden if that would make it easier?

This is supposed to be a 7ft specimen plant Hmm🤣

I wouldn't keep them indoors unless you've got a very light unheated space. They'd be much happier out of doors sheltering by a house wall trying their luck - honest.

Can you plant a hedge windbreak - longer term solution!?

MaryIsA · 15/04/2021 12:06

scroll to the bottom of this page and there's some suggestion for short cherry trees or ones you can grow in pots

Ahh ok was just an idea. I'm spoilt for choice. We've a good nursery near here. If they don't have something they can order it in.

I think I'll give it one last go here in the most sunny and sheltered part of my exposed Atlantic far northerly garden. I'll try it in a pot (so I can move it in a storm) with a small 4ft tree, like Pendula Rosea. I'll try to buy it from somewhere local or go to Inverness so that it's more used to the climate up here. Thank you for the link MaryIsA

Another vote for amelanchier. It's so pretty!

MaryIsA · 15/04/2021 13:43

A local nursery should sell you something suited to the conditions or at least be honest with you if its a bit of a longshot but worth a go!

StatisticallyChallenged · 15/04/2021 13:48

We have several amelanchiers here which are coping well (currently starting to bloom)

Our street runs north south, short street with open spaces at either end and a wall opposite us, so it is actually a wind tunnel. Low of -15 here this winter...so I'd say they're hardy!

AnnieHooo · 15/04/2021 14:50

Just googled Amelanchiers - looks gorgeous, an ideal substitution for cherry.
