Growing Grass

I need some help please.

We rent so can't do anything major, but I'd love to have a more pleasant garden.

There are lots of patches in the garden and I've been trying really hard (with no success) to grow more grass in those areas. I've removed weeds, raked the soil, planted as instructed, watered daily.

Going to try again with an added layer of compost, but I am the worst gardener.

Any advice?

You might need to cover the patches with netting/ sticks to deter birds from eating the seed. I’ve just patched a 2m x1m patch of my lawn, near a hedge. I used tough shade grass seed. I surrounded it with canes, put twine across the area and attached ribbons of silver foil. All to deter birds and cats from the area. The seed took ages to germinate, but is doing well now.
If that had failed I’d have bought turf to patch it.

How would it work to repair patches with turf? Sorry, I'm clueless with gardening. Thanks for the advice!

I have thrift instead of grass.
It’s far prettier.
Looks exactly like short grass but with pretty pink Pom Pom flowers

How much light does it get?
I wonder if it’s maybe too dark for grass to thrive?

Unfortunately we rent so there isn't anything we can do to change the garden, it's just about maintaining.

It does get lots of sunlight but I do think the birds aren't helping as we get blackbirds.

Yes you can buy turf, probably the best idea, if your renting. It’s currently at Homebase £5 a roll. Cut the patch area to a square and rough up the soil, lay the bit of turf and stamp it down. Remember to water it well.

I was looking on the B & Q website and I could only see quantities that started at £100, so I'll be going to Homebase. Thanks!
