Is it possible to get 100% rat proof compost bins?

I would like to make my own compost but I absolutely, totally can't risk rats or mice in it. Is there any such thing as a totally rat and mouse proof compost bin? Or do they need air and thus holes to make good compost??

yes, they need air circulation.
no, they will never be 100% rat proof.
but you can reduce rat attractiveness by only composting garden waste, not food stuff.
the 'dalek' style with a mesh at the bottom is quite good gor small gardens (but getting to the finished product is a bit of a pita)
hot composters could also work, or a wormery.

Hotbin is completely sealed and rat proof. I had one and personally didn't get along with it, but def no rodents got into it or were attracted to it.

I currently have an open 3 bin system which is visited by rats and mice occasionally but I don't find it an issue and much prefer it to the hotbin. Horses for courses! Grin

I put steel mesh under my "dalek" composter when I found a rat on top of my compost.

Never seen one since, but it allows beneficial bacteria from the soil to get in.

Apparently rats hate disruption in their lives (who don’t) so using a compost Turner helps to discourage them. I always give my Daleks compost bins a good thwack before I open the lids just so any visitors can exit - preferably by the back door so I don’t see them!
