ferns for shaded garden

Right then, I've been saying the last couple of years that I'm going to plant up my two large pots out the front but haven't done it, this week I'm sorting it!!!
I'm thinking ferns as my front garden gets no sun at all, it's all shade. I'm wondering do I just plant the ferns and leave them to it? Or do I need to do something with them over winter please? Also best place to purchase please?
Thanks all Flowers

Depends what ferns you buy. Ferns from temperate regions will be fine. www.fibrex.co.uk are the fern specialists and all their ferns are hardy so don’t need protection in the winter

I'll take a look at that site thank you :)

my garden is very shady. every time I go to a garden centre, I get one or two ferns. they are normally hidden away in a forgotten corner and badly labelled because most people don't care which are which. but I just get whatever is cheap & put them in the shady areas. Some thrive, some not so much.

Evergreen ferns are often very good & look nice all year. Hart's Tongue (Asplenium scolopendrium) and Cyrtomium fortunei have both done very well.

I've been to two b&q and 2 b&m garden places and the range and none of them have ferns. Looks like I'll be traveling further to a proper garden centre. Was hoping I could stay a bit more local. Dubious ordering online as I can't see what I'm getting

I have a hairy lip fern which is evergreen and has silvery green furry foliage. According to the RHS it prefers sun but has been thriving in the shade in my garden for the past year. It's doubled in size since I bought it and survived the snow earlier this year.

I also have an ostrich fern which is a bright green fern that looks very tropical. It's my favourite when it's out but sadly, deciduous.

Try Morrison's if yours is big enough to have a plant section. That's where I have bought ferns before.

Mahonia soft caress is brilliant in shade and so attractive. I've got one in very deep shade and it's beautiful, pristine, all year round. I'm currently trying to resist ordering three more of them (it's rare to find in them garden centres but plenty available online).

Can I ask what website you used please?

I bought mine last year from bakker.com: en-gb.bakker.com/products/chinese-grape-shrub-mahonia-soft-caress-yellow-hardy-plant?variant=29425101307979.

Gardening express also has them for 11.99, or £10 each if you buy three or more:
