Evergreen flowering plants/shrubs

Hi expert gardeners out there, I really need some help!

I have 2 spaces in a sheltered area for plants, some details

quite large spaces
get sun/shade
poor soil
need to be hardy (can get very cold)
would like green all year, but with flowers
would prefer red/purple/pink, but other colours would be fine

Is there such a plant (s) I am really clueless when it comes to this kind of gardening.

Any advice or suggestions would be very welcome

Hebes would fit the bill I would say. Nice purple flowers from early spring right through and evergreen. Bees love them. Has been hardy for us down here in the SE for years (does snow sometimes and plenty of frosts) but I’m not sure how they would be in the north of Scotland for example.

Daphne
Cotoneaster
Sarcococa
Nandina
Choisya
Eleagnus
Pittosporum
Mahonia

Evergreen azaleas would fit the bill. I've also planted escallonia and a Chinese witch hazel and have most of the plants on *Listening"'s list.

Skimmia Japonica - dark green leaves all year, pinky-white flowers now that smell amazing.

I also second the Choisya suggestion.

Only problem with heebees is they don’t seem to live very long. After about five years they look very tatty, unless I am not caring for them properly?

EcoCustard · 05/04/2021 18:03

Viburnum tinus has beautiful little pink flowers, evergreen and grows in just about any conditions.

Skimmia japonica is lovely too ours has just burst into flower and buzzing with bees, insects etc. The blackbirds love it in the winter too for berries.

We lost 2 hebes in Surrey after that snowy period, so pick your hebes with care!

Camelia might like it, is your soil acid, or alkaline, do you know?

MrsBertBibby · 05/04/2021 18:47

I really want one of these.

But the white flowers don't fit your brief.

MrsBertBibby · 05/04/2021 18:49

Oh and it's deciduous. Ignore me!

SpanielPlusToddler · 05/04/2021 20:13

A viburnum or ceanothus would also fit the bill.

ListeningQuietly · 05/04/2021 20:15

Ceanothus are good, but only last about seven years.
Some of the shrub honeysuckles are good too

Wow thank you everyone!

Now looking at all the suggestions, and great advice, really appreciate you all taking the time to answer.

Will let you know how I get on
