What can I still plant for this summer from seed?

You were all so helpful when I asked for advice under a different name. Could I ask another beginner question please?

Is there anything I can grow outside from seed at this time of year that will flower this summer?

Many thanks

Most annuals if sown outsides and cared for will be ready to flower this summer. Buy seeds of the things that you like. Annuals are pretty forgiving as long as they have water, dirt and sunshine

The quickest results come from the larger seeds
Sunflower
Nigella
Calendulas
Sweet peas
Candytuft
California poppies
Nasturtium .

I use old milk cartons to start mine off as my garden Is full at the moment. If you have space you can sow directly into the soil. Sow them thinly to save having to thin them out once they germinate. All of the above thrive in poor soil and dry areas. Water them well until they are about 2 inches tall then water sparingly. Don’t feed them as you will get lush green growth instead of flowers. A good way to ensure the plants are spread thinly and to see where you have sown is to mix the seeds with vermiculite.

With all of these the more you harvest, the more flowers you will get. Once late September, arrives , I leave mine as they make brilliant seed heads for winter interest.

There are lots of summer bulbs and corms on sale at the moment. I get mine from Wilco as they are really good quality and very cheap,

I planted some baby's breath in the garden a couple of weeks ago and the seedlings have started popping up. I've got cosmos seedlings indoors but the packet says you can direct sow from May ( my success rate seems to be about 99% so I'd space accordingly even outdoors).

Sarah Raven has a page on ‘what to sow in March, April etc’. Pick annuals that can be sown direct. I was still sowing cornflower in may last year.

We’ve just got nasturtiums sprouting planètes the seeds last weekend.

Chuck them in now, they get massive.

Get some of these! Absolute stunners, they kept going for months for me last summer.

Sweet peas- so easy and beautiful. Still need to buy mine.

Most seeds are planted in April or May, so you haven't missed the boat.

MereDintofPandiculation · 05/04/2021 11:21

Most annuals if sown outsides and cared for will be ready to flower this summer. It's a grim prospect for any annual that doesn't manage to flower this summer Grin

A couple of days ago sowed some of the smaller sun flowers, Evening Sun, in my unheated greenhouse and they have already popped up.
Might be worth a try.

Nigella and wild flowers. Also these, they take 6 weeks, I just chuck them out on the gravel and they grow. I also scatter wildflower seeds, my new house doesn't have any grass just gravel, I'm saving up to have landscaping and flowerbeds but in the meantime I just threw seeds out onto the gravel last years and it was a riot of colour. I usually do it in autumn but they will still grow now.

Most annuals can be planted now. Ones I have found easier to grow are sunflowers, cosmos and snapdragons. I planted some agastache and linaria yesterday so will see how they do.
