Hi there,

I’m new to gardening and bought lots of clematis from Morrison’s. Our soil is clay, so I bought big pot from b&q- 53cm dia and 53cm deep. Please can someone with more knowledge guide me on home many clematis can I possibly plant in this one big pot ? I will add bamboo sticks for support.

What will they be climbing up once they’ve grown beyond the bamboo sticks (which won’t take long at all) ?

Beebumble2 · 03/04/2021 13:58

I have 3 in a 40 cm pot with an obelisk in it for them to climb up. I’ve long forgotten what they are called, but are the large flowered, early summer flowering. So not the rampant varieties. After flowering I lightly prune and usually get a second flowering. I do feed them and make sure they’re well watered.

I have only ever planted one clematis per pot before, sometimes when plants have been young and small l would add some bedding plants for a bit more colour. Most of clematis l plant go straight in the ground and l grow them up Rose arches and trellis fence. I know they like their roots to be kept cool with their heads in the sun. They can grow guide quickly once they get going so will need regular tying in. I have found usually one clematis can quite quickly cover a six foot fence panel, so l wouldn't necessarily put more than one in a pot as they could become a tangled mess. I have found the plant grows better if you train the stems to grow horizontally, produces more growth and coverage than just allowing it to shoot up vertically. If it just grows straight up the base is normally hard with a few sparse flowers on top.

Thank you all for replying. So no, I haven’t put anything else. 2 pots have round obelisk but they’re 40cm dia.

Would the survive in clay soil ? It’s too hard to dig up a lot and add grit / sand.

It depends on the clematis. Do you know the name?

Lovemusic33 · 03/04/2021 15:39

I have clemintis growing in clay soil, bought mine from morrisons 2 years ago (purple Montana I think), its now coming to life this year and should cover at least one fence panel. I don't think they do that great in pots.

one
maybe underplant with springbulbs but clematis need quite a lot of energy to do really well.

AlwaysOnTheRun1014 · 03/04/2021 17:32

Thank you, some of the names are arabella, asao, little Marmaid, cardinal and vyvyan pennell.

Arabella is a scrambler rather than a climber. They are all fine to grow in containers but they will grow 2-3m so they will need something to climb (or scramble). Clematis need deep pots and like their feet in the shade so I would underplant with some bedding plants, maybe petunias. Ideally, one per 40cm pot would be best (although that's a bit small). The more you plant in a pot, the more their growth will be restricted.

I would suggest you look each variety up on the RHS website.

OOh, OP, when did you get those from MOrrisons? Do they have them at the moment?

AlwaysOnTheRun1014 · 03/04/2021 19:06

Hi curly yes I got them yesterday. They had tons! Honeysuckle, Yasmin, fruits all for £2 each.

I don’t think montana comes in purple. If it’s a bluish purple it could be alpina
