Tell me about your plans. And how you're going to keep your seedlings and plants protected from the typical BH weather forecast?

Can’t even buy plants, let alone plant them, OP! Garden centres in Scotland aren’t allowed to open until Easter Monday. Which is not a bank holiday up here.

Balaur · 01/04/2021 21:51

I have some persicaria golden arrow and astrantia roma to plant. I'm wondering whether to just wait a bit, although these are supposed to be pretty Hardy perennials.

Proudboomer · 01/04/2021 21:52

Too early to do much planting outside and the few dahlia tubers I wanted to get started are all ready in the greenhouse so over the weekend weather permitting I am going to get cracking on garden maintance.
Today I put some new ash felt on the shed roof and I want to give the shed a fresh coat of paint. The patio needs a jet wash and the summerhouse needs a clear out and oiling.
If I can get those jobs out the way this weekend I will be happy.

LIZS · 01/04/2021 21:52

Bareroot roses once beds are prepared. Cold-frame just been delivered so will be putting together (any advice on best location/orientation?). Next batch of seeds in shed.

JamMakingWannaBe · 01/04/2021 21:54

I got some lavender from Lidl the other day. Sunflower, cosmos and nicotiana seeds planted last weekend in a seed tray on my windowsill. Cabbage, aubergine and zinnia seeds are in the cold frame. OH wants tatties to chit but we can't get to a garden centre. South Central Scotland.

Titsywoo · 01/04/2021 21:58

I planted some stuff last week and now I'm worried about what will survive the frosts this weekend!

dementedma · 01/04/2021 22:01

Nothing. Too damn cold here in Scotland

MaryIsA · 01/04/2021 22:02

Need to get my tatties in.

Sow cosmos, ammi, cornflower, Quaker grass...

Got a hosts to split.

Lots to pot on.

And really want to stop it being so cold so I can.

beginningoftheend · 01/04/2021 22:04

Herbs, strawberries, wildflower seeds and a hop. Haven't actually read up yet to check on whether the hop needs anything special.

Appuskidu · 01/04/2021 22:08

Can I ask how are people growing cosmos? In a big seed tray? Individual pots with one or two seeds per pot? I impulse bought cosmos, night scented stock, forget me not and nigella seeds last week but don’t really know what to do with them!

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 01/04/2021 22:12

A lilac, astilbe, pinks, eryngium, a cherry and something else I can't remember the name of. I also have a huge hypericum to dig out. I plan to plant a daphne in its place.

MaryIsA · 01/04/2021 22:15

Night scented stock, sow direct in small patches every few weeks when the soil is warm enough.

Cosmos I’ve had equal success with a seed tray and one seed to a cell. In fact probably more with a seed tray. Love cosmos. It grows wild in Japan like dandelions do here.

Nigella good but I’d wait till soil warms up a bit.

Never sown forget le nots bu5 they self seed madly so I reckon just Chuck some around.

WhistlersandJugglers · 01/04/2021 22:20

Not planting anything but I'm going to finish weeding an awkward bed in front of a wall and put in two pieris japonica when I get a chance to get to a garden centre.

didireallysaythat · 01/04/2021 22:27

@Babdoc - apologies. I didn't mean to brag. I haven't been to a garden centre since last September; I'm all about the seeds. And online plug plants.

@Appuskidu I find cosmos germination rate is about 100% so I do one seed per module (while my arch nemesis sweet peas - 5% success)

@MaryIsA have you grown Quaker grass before? Any tips for sewing for success? I tried last year and got narda...

Ohnomoreno · 01/04/2021 22:32

We're late with the potatoes this year. Maybe no bad thing as got a touch of frost last year. Bit lost on the flower front.

Stompythedinosaur · 02/04/2021 01:28

I've got bedding plants to plant and herbs to sow. Some heathers to repot, and I'm going to spray paint some plastic planters. Wondering about sowing some carrots. Really looking forward to my weekend!

MaryIsA · 02/04/2021 06:03

First time with Quaker grass. My garden is clay so I’m not convinced it’s going to work. But I’ll experiment.

Babdoc · 02/04/2021 08:46

No need to apologise, OP! I’m sitting looking at my garden which is stiff with frost after a freezing night - it’s prob just as well the garden centres are shut! I might be doing some planting in about a month’s time.

didireallysaythat · 02/04/2021 09:16

@Babdoc frost already? I think we're due some later this weekend. Gutted as my peach tree, bought on a complete whim as our garden isn't sheltered enough, has blossom on it for the first time ever. I wasn't expecting fruit, but the flowers are lovely.

tarapinn · 02/04/2021 14:09

I've got 139 coreopsis seedlings! I couldn't bear to prick them out so put them all in individual pots. Got the kids to save their mousse and yoghurt pots! Also got 41 delphiniums and about 25 heliopsis and some penstemon and osteo somethingorothers! ShockGrinGrin
God knows what I'm going to do with them all!!

indignatio · 02/04/2021 16:02

Given the expected Artic blast, should I be planting my second earlies this weekend? SE but high and quite exposed

indignatio · 02/04/2021 16:10

Sorry forgot to mention, in brand new raised beds

ThePricklySheep · 02/04/2021 16:13

@Babdoc

I just shat myself and thought I was meant to be at work on Monday! It is a public holiday? Google says?
MilduraS · 02/04/2021 16:22

Monday isn't an official bank holiday in Scotland but you might be living in one of the areas where your local authority has decided Easter Monday should be a bank holiday.

didireallysaythat · 02/04/2021 16:33

@tarapinn sounds like you and I might have a similar approach to gardening. I didn't plant many courgette seeds but foolishly planted a dozen different squash, all of which are now quite big, needed potting on and space on a windowsill. This happens every year - why don't I learn?
