Raised bed - novice

Hello,

I'm a semi experienced seed sower for windowsills in flats, Grin I've recently moved into a house with a garden

The front garden gets sun most of the day - west facing - and we want to do a temporary raised bed. The front is slabs and gravel.

Could things like radishes and lettuces - things that don't grow too deep be okay in a deepish raised bed ontop of slabs - or do they need soil underneath?

Next year we plan on getting rid of all the gravel and having a lawn and proper raised beds

Really keen to sow some seeds this weekend before it's too late and get stuff in the ground.

Thanks for any advice - total novice to garden owning!

Radishes and lettuce would be absolutely fine. I grow all sorts in mine - beans, peas, broccoli, beetroot etc.
I use tubs for carrots and potatoes.

Depends on depth. I put weed-suppressing membrane under ours and filled with compost, but use double height beds for carrots, parsnips etc. Lettuce, radishes, strawberries etc are fine in single height. Tomatoes, peas and beans can also be grown in growbags with supports. Potatoes can be grown in deep containers.

Thanks so much! I am so keen to get going! Hopefully my little temp DIY raised bed won't look to "informal" for the neighborhood Grin
