Hi, I’m pretty clueless about gardening so hoping someone can help me

It will be my son’s 10th anniversary on the 15th June, (he died when he was a baby) and we’d like to plant something in his memory but have no idea what.

Ideally nothing too big, it’s going to go in grass at the front of the house so don’t want something that going to be big and block light in the window. Thinking maybe of something flowering that’s quite hard so will last.
Much appreciated if anyone can point me in the right direction. Thanks

How about an upright flowering cherry. You can buy dwarf varieties.
Or Robinia pseudoacsia casque rouge which flowers in June.

They don't flower but Acers are lovely and most varieties are slow growing.

EndOfLifeDoula · 24/03/2021 14:10

I’d consider planting in a pot in case you move one day so you can take it with you.

Acers do flower! Just not interestingly

it's a lovely idea.

I planted a sorbus joseph rock for a similar reason. It's got lovely autumn colour and berries that the birds love and lovely unfurling leaves in spring.

It's not too big and quite feathery. It's a lovely tree and I like that its good for nature.

the other tree I love is the cornus contraversa variegata.

Good point that if you ever move the tree will probably stay...but you can always plant a new one...

Does it have to be a tree?
I planted a rose for my late husband called remember me.
It is a hybrid tea rose that repeat flowers large blooms all through summer
www.britishroses.co.uk/acatalog/Remember-Me.html
Gets to about a metre tall and forms a bush.

Thanks everyone, some great suggestions there. Doesn’t have to be a tree, actually a rose bush sounds lovely. Sorry don’t know how to reply to people individually.
I’m on the school run now but will check all those out when i get home

It's possible you might be able to get something related to his name - a friend of mine planted an Acer davidii for similar reasons. I agree with Doula that a pot is a better idea, anything big will be difficult to move and you won't want to leave it behind if you do decide to sell up.

Sorry for your loss Sad

Turquoise thank you.
Never thought of that, his name was James so might have a chance

Hadn’t thought about a pot but it makes sense and there’s a good chance we will move at some point.
Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions 😊

I have gone roses for the people I have lost and they are in pots as we tend to move a lot. I have bought a memorial tree but in the hospital garden iyswim.

There's a climbing rose James Galway, a couple of apple trees with James in the name and if you go on to the RHS website you get about 300 plant suggestions if you search for James Shock but few are shrubs or trees.

A good one might be a David Austin rose called James Austin; that might work in a large pot.

Plenty of choice there’s thanks everyone. Think I’m going to go with a rose bush

In memorium, I’ve planted a David Austin rose bush - Lichfield Angel. It flowered through to mid-November last year, really looking forward to seeing how well it does in its second year.

Onlinedilema · 28/03/2021 09:17

Hi op. Have you looked at the David Austen website. I have ordered from there and been very satisfied. You can look at different criteria such as eventual height, colour etc. I emailed them for advice and they were very helpful.

So sorry for your loss! Not sure if you have made your decision yet but there is a guide to planting memorial trees which has some suggestions if this could be of any use to you www.inscripture.com/inscripture-news/your-guide-to-planting-a-memorial-tree/
