Hi, can anyone recommend a climbing rose that will grow well in
Poor soil
North facing
Windy conditions

I’m looking for one (or two) climbing roses to go around my front door and will live in either poor soil or large pots, it would be nice if they were thornless and scented too Grin not asking much am I!

Any recommendations please Flowers

I have zephirine drouhin against a fence which gets pretty much no sun. The smell is fantastic, it's thornless and is (so far) easy enough to control.

It is susceptible to disease - I pick off any splotchy leaves and give it a good mulch of manure in the spring, so it's mostly ok, but I have to confess to giving it the occasional spray of fungicide.

I also have the orange Lady of Shallot, which gets slightly more sun but not a lo (east facing, sun until about midday). It's fantastic but certainly not thornless

Mme Alfred Carriere is what David Austin recommended for me when I called them looking for a climber for my north facing, dry spot. It has been great, but I wonder if it might be too big for you?

Thank you, I actually have a bare root zephirine coming so will def try ThAt. I’m a bit wary of the mme alfred carriere as I heard it can damage brickwork? I have a sloping roof over the front door which it could climb up to its heart content but how does it fare with slabs and bricks?

I really like pale old fashioned Colette. She is adaptable and very fragrant but is thorny.

I have just planted generous gardener in a similar spot - but it has thorns.

Claire Austin? It has the fragrance, but also has the thorns.

Or Mortimer sackler which doesn’t have the thorns, but doesn’t have the fragrance either.

Both are good for doorways, will grow on north facing walls and are good for poor soil.

Another vote for Mme Alfred Carriere- it truly is beautiful and the scent is gorgeous. It also has the benefit of being pretty fast growing. I didn't have any issues with damaged brickwork, but maybe if you fitted a trellis or support of some kind for it to scramble up it would be ok? I find with roses there are thorns and then there are thorns! I don't mind roses with big thorns as they're fairly easy to work around when you're pruning, but the roses with thousands of tiny little ones that are like razors are horrible! If you go on the David Austin website they have a very helpful live chat where they can recommend varieties too.

Thanks, I am going for Mme Alfred carriere, I love the colour! I’m excited to hear it’s fast growing, I’ll just have to watch where it grows.

I will put the zephirine on the other side, does anyone know if it will do ok in a large pot?
