I have this growing at the end of my garden. I didn't plant it, it seems to have self seeded there. Is it a tree? Should I remove it before it gets even taller?

I reckon it’s a sycamore sapling, but I’m really not certain. It’ll be much easier to tell what it is when the leaves open.

If it’s a sycamore then absolutely get rid of it unless you want it to end up bigger then your house and its roots to undermine the foundations of the building it’s growing next to.

Exactly what the first time said. It looks like a sycamore seedling and unless you're willing to home a mahoosive tree which will eclipse your whole garden, then remove it now!

I'm removing it today. Do I need to pull out the roots? I'm assuming I do.

Sycamore - the growth pattern, angle of branches is characteristic and the buds clinch it.. You need to remove the bit where the stem joins the roots but no need to remove all the roots. If you don't get enough out, it can re-shoot in later years, but if you keep an eye on it and cut off any shoots as they appear, it'll give up once it's used all its energy reserves in its roots.
