Trees been cut down at neighbours - garden now got no shade!

Neighbours to the south of us are in the process of felling 6 mature ash trees due to ash dieback (all above board and necessary) but it's left my garden horribly exposed to the south and now full sun all day.

I have plants in the garden which are now going to be in full sun where before they had some shade protection. I'm going to lose them aren't I?

Not really anywhere to move them to unfortunately. Thinking of maybe planting trees on our boundary but that's not going to fix things for this year.

Any ideas how to provide shade or do I resign myself to some plants curling up and dieing?

What about a bit of cheap trellis or the like for shade

Not necessarily. Plants don't actively look for lack of light, they look for lack of competition, and then adapt to cope with all the things that go along with the lack of competition. So plants which grow in shade don't have to develop defences against lack of water or scorching midsummer sun, or encroaching other plants.

So you'll need to make sure the soil stays moist, and make sure they don't get swamped by all the other plants that are moving in. In terms of shade, a trellis to the S, or maybe some tall perennials, may do the trick.

What are the plants?

Talk to your neighbours about their plans. They may be proposing to replace the trees. No point in you both planting trees.

A sail shade will help whilst you grow your own screening.

Ornamental grasses would grow faster than a tree.
