Hello everyone. I have lots of these woodlands type flowers in my garden. They seem to be spreading (not going mad). I like them. Any ideas what they are ? They appear to
Have been planted on purpose by previous owners. Thank you!

Celandine.

MereDintofPandiculation · 10/03/2021 13:21

Lesser celandine, Ficaria verna. Spreads vigorously by bulbils and difficult to control, but the leaves all die down by summer. There are garden varieties on sale, eg Brazen Hussy with glossy bronze leaves

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 10/03/2021 13:30

I had the bronze variety in my previous garden and have planted them in my current garden (been here 18 months new build)

They spread really well over time and you get a yellow carpet in March and April that completely disappears by mid summer - even the foliage ...

After around 10-15 years 2 small plants had spread to an area of around 3 metres within a shrub/perennials bed.

Hmmm.... should I be keeping in check then? Or discouraging? 🤔

I do think they're pretty though

Up to you. If you like them, keep them, if not, keep trying to dig them out

SugarBlossomFairy · 10/03/2021 13:34

There's an app you can get to identify plants - I use it all the time when I'm deciding what to keep! It's called Picturethis - plant identifier Smile

Kdubs1981 · 10/03/2021 13:38

Picture this had no clue! Hence you lovely peopleSmile

I have something to identify too - should I start my own thread?

ChristopherTracy · 10/03/2021 14:52

It is this thing that has popped up in an otherwise clear area.

Difficult to tell, but dock, I think. Make sure you get all the tap root.

TheLongRider · 10/03/2021 14:59

Definitely a dock weed. The roots go very far down like a dandelion.

ChristopherTracy · 10/03/2021 15:08

Interesting, not had that in the garden before. Laughable that I couldn't identify it. Though it is near where I left some nettles last year for wildlife.

Daisydoesnt · 10/03/2021 15:09

ChristopherTracy that is a dock. Bleddy nightmare! My advice is to dig it out when the ground is wet/ soft and make sure you use a trowel (don’t try to just pull it out). As others have said it has a really really long tap root. So it now before it gets any bigger!
