Best troughs or planters

We are re-doing an area in front of the house and I am thinking of using large pots or planters to put in lavender, rosemary and some grasses. I also want a couple of small trees including a small palm tree. What are the best planters? I have some plastic ones but they fade. I've also had some terracotta ones which have been OK. I like the look of rectangular wooden ones but am worried they will rot over time. I also have an old metal one from Ikea which has been pretty good but is now starting to rust. It seems as though they all have their pluses and minuses.

Those harrod horticultural ones are gorgeous but a bit out of our price range. I have a few weeks to think about it and may use some of the larger pots I have at the moment until I get a clearer idea of what I want to do. If I bought wooden ones would they rot or is there anything in particular I should look for?

I think you are better buying plastic liners for wooden pots. So basically a smaller pot or plastic sheet the same size to put inside. Then treat the planters themselves with a water repellent.

Some of them come with liners

If you just put the dirt straight in and don’t protect them, then yes they will rot.
