Did anyone else get the David Austin 2021 handbook through the post?

There are so many beautiful roses! I would love to know what other people might be buying from them this year. We have a few DA roses (Wollaton Old Hall, Crown Princess Margareta) but I am keen to add a few more and would particularly welcome any rose recommendations for large containers. Also would you advise planting several roses of the same variety together in a pot or just the one plant? Thank you

Have you seen their new NHS special rose that is being released this year?

Should do well in a container, I would probably do one plant per pot.

I’ve bought Vanessa Bell and Desdemona in the past. I saw that Monty puts them in deep pots the first year and then out into the garden. I have planted them in 3s and they looked absolutely glorious last year. I’ve got load of new growth this year too so very excited to see how they bush up!

This year I’ve bought 3x royal jubilee and a few climbers. I can’t wait to see the blooms. Soon my garden will be overrun with roses! I hope to add a new variety each year.

I’d love to hear what you decide to buy- keep us posted!

Thank you for your replies! Yes I’ve seen the new NHS rose and i do like the look of it although I was originally thinking I would like to add some more colour to our garden. I am trying to decide whether to go for pale shades of rose or lots of colour! Very difficult to choose as I like ALL the roses! I am leaning towards colour as it’s cheerful in the garden.

I have my eye on Gertrude Jekyll for my deep pots (thank you for the tip from Monty, that’s really helpful to know) and also this one for a shaded area to hopefully scramble up through a tree www.davidaustinroses.co.uk/products/veilchenblau

My purchases were pale in colour as they are planted with lots of salvias and lady’s mantle, so I was going for a white, purple, green theme.

My absolute favourite is Gertrude Jekyll- the smell is divine. I had a few that I dug up to move and they didn’t make it (more my bad care of them than them being a bad buy). I would highly recommend them. They look beautiful in a cut flower display... and did I mention the wonderful scent....

Just about to burst into flower is my Banksaei Lutea. It was a GQT recommendation. It is the earliest Rose to flowe, sweetly scented and thotnless.

I have a lot of David Austin roses and most of them I’d be happy to buy again!

One of the easiest, most reliable ones I’ve got is Olivia Rose Austin. It starts flowering early and pretty much looks after itself. Mine is grown in less than ideal conditions (quite shady, poor soil) but it’s nevertheless prolific.

I also really like The Lady of Shalott. That one starts flowering a bit later, but keeps going until the first frost. It’s difficult to tell from the photos on the D.A. website, but the colour of the flowers is quite eye catching (in a good way!). I grow mine in semi-shade next to a fuchsia and it’s not unusual for both plants to still be going strong in November

I have a Jude the obscure, the smell is incredible! I have it in a large pot.

I've just bought Ferdinand Pichard www.davidaustinroses.co.uk/products/ferdinand-pichard

I'm hoping the flowers are as beautiful as they look in the photos. It's an old rose so the scent is supposed to be quite strong too.

Thank you everyone it’s really useful to know your recommendations! I shall need a bigger garden Smile I’ve just noticed with my catalogue that I have a 15% discount code to share with friends in case anyone finds this helpful it’s NYE (ends 9/4/21)

Another early one is R. sericea ssp omiensis f "pteracantha" . Usually grown for its translucent red winged thorns, but another strange thing about it is that it has only 4 petals.

It's not as early as March, though.

I love the DA catalogue! So tempting, have to work out where I might squeeze in another one. They are one of the few plants that do really well in my garden, despite the constant battering with footballs etc!

My neighbour had three DA roses in a huge terracotta pot and they look amazing!

I planted a load of Gabriel Oak shrubs last year. The scent is blooming gorgeous - can’t remember if they are ok for containers.

I also planted some standards - Olivia Austin Roses.

They were planted at the end of May. And both the shrubs and standards still had new buds forming in the middle of a November (I’m in the South East).

Really impressed with their roses, and I love the book - you’ve reminded me to order the latest copy.
