Fence Sprayers - Do they work?

AlanThePig · 03/03/2021 12:12

Just that really. I need to replace 7 panels on the drive and paint both sides. A task I'm not particularly relishing.
I've looked at the Ronseal kit on B&Q and it gets appalling reviews. Has anyone found one that works or am I going for the good old fashioned brush method?

I brought the ronseal one and the nozzle kept getting blocked. I probably spent as much time trying to unblock the nozzle as I would have spent using a brush.

I'm annoyed about it still and that was 3 years ago!

GirlCrush · 03/03/2021 12:17

do people all use the ronseal sprayable paint in the ronseal sprayers though???

or go for a cheaper paint?

This is what I keep reading. Frustrating really as I can see how it would be easier if any of them actually bloody did what it says on the tin.

i work somewhere that sells these

we return them mainly due to misuse and instructions not being followed....pls bear this in mind when reading reviews. People generally dont like owning up to diy mistakes....i see it all day long.

water needs to go through the tubes first to clear out any particles from manufacturing process and to assist paint to slide through. this is important especially for the nozzle area

use only the paint recommended....too many people think they can use any old fence paint. manufacturers are wise to this so all paints have a different thickness and viscosity which generally just works better with their branded sprayer

after use they should always have water run through to clean the sprayer, don't just put it away. sounds like common sense doesn't it? you would be surprised!!!

ronseal is generally a good brand. cuprinol is as good

GirlCrush · 03/03/2021 12:32

we probably sell 200 of these a week and generally get 2 a week returned....usually last years complete with dead spiders inside

but if you do go down the brush route, consider rollers as well. i'm hearing good things from customers about fence paint rollers, not used one myself though

AlanThePig · 03/03/2021 12:36

Interesting. Thank you @GirlCrush
I hadn't considered a roller either.

Now to decide on colour. It's currently green but I want a more natural colour I think. Everywhere seems to be grey at the moment!

I'm sure this is obvious but do check the other side of fence and warn your neighbours,if their vehicles are the other side. Our neighbour did this year's ago and exh's motorbike got a fine covering of brown spots. He was rather cross!

CupboardOfJoy · 03/03/2021 12:49

We've still got brown paint on the bricks of our house, from the neighbour spraying her fence over 10 years ago. She also sprayed the side of my car, our windows, and window frames, but she managed to get most of that off.

TheQueef · 03/03/2021 12:50

I've tried a few, only one, a Wagner, saved time or effort.
Last year it took me an entire bloody week to finish and it's crap.
Used next doors fence roller for the front and will be buying one for myself this year.

No neighbour to warn happily as his side of the fence is thick bushes (partly what's knackered the old fence by pushing it, but I digress). I'm going to do both sides before it goes up.

I've ordered myself 80l of light Creocote now and I'm just going to paint the lot, and other fences I've sorely neglected, by hand. Might invest in a roller and give that a go. Now need several days of decent weather....

we had snails splattered with various colours when all the neighbours did their fences last spring! was quite funny matching them up!!

didnt dare return them to them though

dark oak, harvest gold, forest green and slate grey snails

Toddlerteaplease · 03/03/2021 14:37

I very nearly bought one of these the other day. But the sprayer was £30 and the paint was £17. I did the whole thing in two hours and for £27 with a brush.

TheQueef · 03/03/2021 14:41

Just a thought but when they erect the fence ask them not to screw it in if you want to remove it to paint next time.
I have to take the panels out (messy painter) or the posts would need doing.

They aren't fixing it, we are. Should be as simple as them dropping off the panels and me painting and fixing. They are 6x4's fixed along a wall with pillars in between. Batons are already there and in good condition so will be easy (hopefully!) I've added a picture as it's hard to explain. I also look forward to seeing the back of that bloody green colour 😂

Shock green on the front fence!
I would have to take those down to paint Blush
Absolutely get a roller and some 1" brushes it'll take no time and look great.

Indeed. Not my idea I add. We inherited those. I much prefer natural and the fence across the other side is just that so I have no idea what possessed someone to paint it that colour.

We've since installed a bit wooden electric gate there too which in a natural colour really jars with the green. I'm really looking forward to them going.

I am going to try and reuse a couple of the better ones to create a bin store, but they wont be as obvious where they are going.
