Hello, I love gardening but bought a house with a very old mature garden. The first two years we have done the inside of the house but now I am trying to do that garden. Last year I basically just trimmed all the bushes etc and we sewed a wild meadow at the front ( I hope it has taken and hopefully I will see this year!). The grass has taken over the beds and I have no idea what to do. I am not strong enough to fork the grass up!

After lots and lots of searching through millions of site I have found a brilliant you tube person.

I have bought sweet peas and am soaking them at the moment before I plant them into pots. The house came with a green house so that is exciting. This is the first person who has been clear enough for me to follow.

Can I ask that you give me your favourite person to help you in your garden? I do watch Monty and try to do the two actions for my garden every weekend and can't wait for him to come on again!!!

Thank you! I am ordering some seed potatoes this weekend. Do you have any easy veg suggestions? I don't want to jump in too much. I will have herbs this year, potatoes and maybe one or two more things x

Someone on here mentioned The Middle Sized Garden the other day and I've fallen into a rabbit hole. So many short videos to cover every topic you need it to.

I have had a few failed attempts at gardening over the years but it's something that I really want to learn about. Would these video recommendations be good for an enthusiastic beginner?

I would say easy veg to start with are tomatoes, French beans and courgettes. With most veg remember they need to be in a position where they are getting decent light and sun warmth. They are greedy feeders because they are putting on a lot of growth and producing their babies (!) in a relatively short period of time . So they also need regular watering and feeding. I would start off with ready grown plants from a garden supplier rather than starting off your own from seed. Make sure they have decent soil or compost to grow in. Because I have a small garden and am visited by foxes and cats I grow my veg in large pots which I fill with the contents of grow bags .

If you really want to grow edible stuff from seed then leafy salad crops are good, you can buy packets of mixed cut and come again salad leaves which give a decent return, and don’t need thinning, just sow them thinly. The ones from Jekkas are interesting mixes but you can find similar ones in garden centres.

@MilduraS I found the middle sized garden, too! She includes so many topics and speaks about them thoroughly enough but in the right kind of pace to be informative but not too brisk. I liked a video by Garden Ninja too, the other day. Also does anyone know any good podcasts? I have listened to some but they didn't go into depth or they had loads of chitchat that seemed really off topic - anything longer than 40 mins just needs to be edited IMHO.

I like the Middle sized garden too!

I am primarily a fruit and veg gardener, so I like the following which are allotment based but obvs you dont have to grow your f&v at an allotment!

I also love - at the other end of the £ scale, Bunny Guinness
( youtube.com/c/bunnyguinness ) who does very high end garden designs but is an excellent and inspiring watch and has really practical tips.

Agree - toms, courgettes and French or runner beans. Also salad leaves, spring onions and herbs.

I love Yorkshire Kris, he does tropical gardening for UK gardens which is something i'm trying this year hopefully.

Olliphant · 03/03/2021 12:41

Oh thank you everyone! Have been enjoying all your suggestions. Weather a bit chilly again....cone on spring!

I've started watching YouTube videos recently too, though mainly fruit/veg related. My favourite is Jessie at Plot 37. She is so enthusiastic it's infectious and you get a slice of her life as well as her garden.

Others I've enjoyed are: Liz Zorab, Charles Dowding and Huw Richards.
