Rosemary

In our last house we inherited a lovely Rosemary bush which thrived and we always had bountiful supply with zero gardening intervention (hurrah!). It was a north facing garden and quite an exposed position which seems to be the complete opposite of the conditions recommended for growing Rosemary, however it seemed to love the conditions. Anyway...new house, sunny south facing garden and less exposed. We tried planting a few times but never had any success :( anyone any thoughts on what we should be doing to get it to take hold?

I have had my rosemary in a big pot for about 4 years. It's in a mix of compost and gritty sand on our decking, away from the fences so it's in sun all day. Last summer work was so hectic I really neglected the garden and it absolutely thrived even during the heat wave. I'm planning to neglect it this summer because it was the best it's ever been. We were cutting branches to use as skewers for the bbq and it just kept growing.

Soil type I guess

Thanks both...yes I think maybe the soil is problematic. I’ll try a big pot this year!

It needs good drainage. So added sand to soil is a good idea or drainage with gravel at the bottom of pot

If it keeps failing, you can buy replacement plants from the supermarket in the herb section, we've done this a few times, a bit cheaper than a garden centre.

Cuttings are not too difficult, so if you get a big plant going in a pot, you can start up a lot of cuttings and try them in different places.

Can you take cuttings at this time of year?

MissyB1 · 28/02/2021 18:51

We’ve grown it successfully in a pot in our North facing back garden, but also in the soil in our south facing front garden.
It’s basil I can’t grow Sad

Isn't spring when you take softwood cuttings and root with bottom heat? I don't know, I've never tried them. I usually take cuttings summer to autumn, but if I were, for example, moving the plant, then I'd take some cuttings whatever the time of year. You haven't lost anything and they might root.
