Poppy seeds

No doubt a stupid question for those in the know but will poppy seeds bought to put in cooking/baking germinate if I throw them on the soil in the garden or are they processed?

Thank you!

I doubt it. I imagine they would have gone through some sort of processing to make them ‘food standard’.
Happy to be wrong, though.

Not sure about poppy seeds but I accidentally dropped some cumin seeds in a plant pot on my windowsill last year, and they germinated!

I found this on growing poppies for edible seeds which implies they're just dried.

Well, you could give it a go, but they won't necessarily be from plants with particularly attractive colours. Better to buy a pack meant for the garden - there are loads of gorgeous ones and some of them are really cheap. I've never actually tried them - I just get random lovely raspberry pink ones emerge if I dig over my beds... I've lived here 25 years so make sure it's a type you like before sowing, they could be coming up decades later!Grin

Thank you! I’ll give it a go! I have a big bag of poppy seeds for bread and am just going to scatter them and see what happens!

Errol Thanks for the article! Really interesting! 😊

I do know what you mean Errol about the colours! It’s a wild area at the bottom of my garden so I’m not too worried what grows there! ... It will be interesting to see if any of them germinate!

Please come back later if they grow. 😊

If they do grow you would have an ever supply of seeds

I'm collecting on average over a kilo of seeds a year, though I think last years have got spoiled

redcandlelight · 06/02/2021 12:12

yes you can, many other seeds work as well, as long as thry are not de-husked.
nigella is especially beautiful in flower.

I’ve just scattered some liberally (I know that’s not what you do!) in a few areas!
I used to crush up poppy heads and sprinkle the contents and they came back every year! I’ve not done that for several years and numbers have dwindled...
We’re due very cold temperatures & snow and I’ve read the seeds need a cold spell to get going (weird) - I’ll let you know overrun with poppies in the summer or not! 😅😅

I used to crush the heads and sprinkle them everywhere but haven’t done that for a few years. It really helps to keep them going. I wish I’d kept it up.
The ones I’ve sprinkled are labelled ‘blue poppies’ from a health food shop (used in bread and muffins).
I usually get yellow and orange Himalayan in my garden.

This is what I’m hoping for 😂🤣 Haha!!

I would love blue poppies, I've been told they can be difficult

Our first lot of poppies were 'free', as we had a few tons of topsoil tipped onthe front garden in November, did nothing with it, then poppies came up the next spring. So I have kept them going

I have to say I had never realised poppies came in so many colours or shapes. Ive had double ones like carnations, ones with crosses on. Purple, lilac, white, pink, red in various shades. Absolutely beautiful
